The music industry holds the most shocking tales \u2014 think Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Amy Winehouse and others passing away at the peak of their careers.<\/p>\n<p>But Hollywood is also rife with horror stories about stars doomed by their addictions. We\u2019ve lost plenty of actors too soon, including big names like Heath Ledger and Philip Seymour Hoffman.<\/p>\n<p>Many stars, however, survive their addictions. And some even go on to greater creative heights after getting clean and sober. Here are some Hollywood addiction success stories:<\/p>\n<p>Robert Downey, Jr.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cChaplin\u201d star made headlines by <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/2cf7dc630a00b76159e541c09913087e\">passing out in the bed<\/a> of his neighbor\u2019s son in 1996. That same year he got <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/blogs\/entertainment\/2014\/09\/robert-downey-jr-talks-about-addiction-and-passing-them-to-his-son\">stopped by the police<\/a> for speeding, and officers found an unloaded gun plus cocaine, heroin and crack cocaine in his car.<\/p>\n<p>He tried rehab twice, escaping both times, and eventually landed a 36-month jail sentence for repeated parole violations. He served less than a year, but incarceration nudged him toward recovery. It still took more brushes with the law for the actor to try rehab again, but this time it stuck.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s been sober since 2003, and, in 2008,\u00a0 kickstarted the biggest movie franchise of the 21st century with \u201cIron Man.\u201d Despite the high-profile 2020 dud \u201cDoolittle,\u201d Downey remains one of Hollywood\u2019s biggest stars.<\/p>\n<p>Bradley Cooper<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cStar Is Born\u201d actor\/director has touched upon his addiction issues over the years, but he dug deeper into the matter during the \u201cSmartLess\u201d podcast co-hosted by Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes. Why expand on the subject via a comedy podcast?<\/p>\n<p>The 47-year-old <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/celebrities\/2022\/06\/15\/bradley-cooper-addiction-sobriety-journey-will-arnett\/7632383001\/\">Cooper credits Arnett<\/a> with pointing him in the right direction.<\/p>\n<p>The Oscar nominee says he suffered from low self-esteem when he moved to Hollywood in his 20s, and he used a mean-spirited sense of humor to compensate. Drugs and alcohol fueled that false sense of security, and it eventually spiraled out of control.<\/p>\n<p>Except the future \u201cHangover\u201d star didn\u2019t realize it at the time. But Arnett did.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cArrested Development\u201d star gave Cooper some tough love advice that helped push him toward sobriety. Being a father, Cooper added, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wdsu.com\/article\/bradley-cooper-shares-will-arnett-helped-him-get-sober\/40302260\">keeps him from going back to that lifestyle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery single thing is absolutely shaded by or brought out in glorious colors by the fact that I get to be a father to a wonderful human being. It\u2019s just the absolute greatest thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ben Affleck<\/p>\n<p>The Boston native seems to have it all: an Oscar-winning career, a beautiful fiance (Jennifer Lopez) and steady gigs since the mid-90s. But Affleck has let fans know about his battles with the bottle over the years, and the role it played in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/pop-culture\/pop-culture-news\/ben-affleck-alcohol-played-part-ending-marriage-jennifer-garner-rcna8845\">sinking his marriage<\/a> to actress Jennifer Garner.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Most recently, he used those experiences to fuel his powerful performance in 2020\u2019s \u201cThe Way Back.\u201d The critically-hailed film cast him as a former basketball coach trying to stay sober long enough to resurrect his life and career.<\/p>\n<p>Affleck opened up in dramatic fashion during a 2020 interview with The New York Times, the kind of candor that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/02\/18\/movies\/ben-affleck.html\">went beyond Movie Promotion<\/a> 101.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is Ben Affleck, raw and vulnerable, talking extensively for the first time about getting sober (again) and trying to recalibrate his career (again).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Affleck\u2019s directorial career temporarily stalled with the 2016 flop \u201cLive by Night,\u201d but he\u2019s still one of the most in-demand actors today. Next up? Directing himself and longtime pal Matt Damon in the upcoming, as-yet-unnamed Nike-themed film.<\/p>\n<p>Alec Baldwin<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t take a psychology degree to suspect the \u201c30 Rock\u201d alum struggles with anger. What many don\u2019t know is Baldwin battled other demons earlier in his career, long before his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/people\/2018\/11\/02\/alec-baldwin-arrest-temper-voicemail-flight-bike\/1860480002\/\">public meltdowns<\/a> and last year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/article\/alec-baldwin-shooting-investigation.html\">accidental shooting<\/a> on the set of \u201cRust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Entertainment\/alec-baldwin-opens-family-career-past-addiction-memoir\/story?id=46528397\">shared<\/a> his early, painful struggles with \u201cGood Morning America\u201d in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got sober when I was just about to turn 27 \u2026 and those two years that I lived in that white-hot period, as a daily drug abuser, as a daily drinker\u2026to my misery, boy, that was a tough time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Baldwin expounded on that chapter in his life in his 2017 memoir, \u201cNevertheless.\u201d Like Cooper, Baldwin battled back his addictions before fame and fortune struck.<\/p>\n<p>Drew Barrymore<\/p>\n<p>The little girl from 1982\u2019s \u201cE.T.\u201d could have been just another child actor statistic. Young Barrymore enjoyed a string of high-profile roles as a child, including the Stephen King adaptations \u201cFirestarter\u201d and \u201cCat\u2019s Eye.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She also became <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/culture\/2015\/oct\/25\/drew-barrymore-mother-locked-up-in-institution-interview\">addicted to alcohol, and then drugs<\/a>, before her 13th birthday, thanks to lax parenting and an acting career that began when she was just 11 months old. Her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elle.com\/fashion\/celebrity-style\/interviews\/a30581\/drew-barrymore-studio-54\/\">infamous trips<\/a> to Studio 54 made all the wrong headlines.<\/p>\n<p>Young Barrymore went to rehab as a pre-teen and probably wondered if her career had ended before she could legally vote. She focused on her sobriety and her show business work resumed.<\/p>\n<p>And then some.<\/p>\n<p>She revisited her party girl days, to a certain degree, in her 20s.
