The national average surpassed $5 per gallon for the first time June 11, with approximately a third of all stations in the country charging over that amount, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/06\/11\/business\/gas-prices-five-dollars-national-june\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CNN<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>The Facebook <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CullmanDailyNews\/posts\/pfbid0XVd465iWPRKyGymTP3ozfb8KPpuvL726ywXojAtPZ4QWsJGBsUzrE4DbTkvBnSurl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">post<\/a>, shared more than 6,600 times, shows a gas station sign listing gas for $1.99 a gallon with the words \u201cNever Forget January 6.\u201d The post\u2019s caption reads, \u201cOh yeah, January 6th, 2021\u2026when Americans could still afford to get to work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the image is genuine, the photo predates the current surge in gas prices. A reverse image search found that the image first appeared on the image hosting site <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jeepersmedia\/16341361541\/in\/photostream\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Flickr<\/a> in January 2015. \u201cLow Cheap Gas Price Citgo Station, $1.99 1\/2015 by Mike Mozart of TheToyChannel and JeepersMedia on YouTube\u201d the image\u2019s description reads.\u00a0<strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2022\/06\/20\/fact-check-gas-prices-january-6-2021-image\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RELATED: Does This Image Show Cheap Gas Prices Were On Jan. 6, 2021?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>National gas prices in January 2015 were $2.11 per gallon, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/opendata\/v1\/qb.php?sdid=PET.EMM_EPMR_PTE_NUS_DPG.M\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Energy Information Administration (EIA)<\/a>. The\u00a0national gas prices in January 2021 were $2.33 per gallon, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/opendata\/v1\/qb.php?sdid=PET.EMM_EPMR_PTE_NUS_DPG.M\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EIA<\/a>. Some states registered gas prices near $2 per gallon, while some individual stations registered lower, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.automotive-fleet.com\/10134992\/national-average-gas-prices-rise-steadily-in-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Automotive-Fleet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Gas prices have risen for a variety of factors, including sanctions on Russian energy related to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, rising demand, and the U.S.\u2019s limited ability to turn oil into gas, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/why-are-gas-prices-rising-541819ca1aa4d3dc0a0206271f9f8589\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Associated Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time gas-related misinformation has circulated on social media.
