State Attorney General Drew Wrigley wrote the Kansas-based trust on Tuesday asking what it plans to do with the land, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agweek.com\/business\/entity-linked-to-billionaire-bill-gates-pays-13-5-million-for-campbell-farms-north-dakota-farmland\">AG Week reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur office needs to confirm how your company uses this land and whether this use meets any of the statutory exceptions, such as the business purpose exception, so that we may close this case and file it in our inactive files,\u201d the letter stated.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Bill Gates \u2013 largest land owner in the USA.<\/p>\n<p>All rich countries should move to 100% synthetic beef. It\u2019s so important that government coercion could be necessary to change attitudes\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can sort of change the behavior of people or use regulation to totally shift demand.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/XT2qB8cWnc\">pic.twitter.com\/XT2qB8cWnc<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Bernie&#8217;s Tweets (@BernieSpofforth) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BernieSpofforth\/status\/1538418077049692160?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 19, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Gates, the mega-rich software developer who wants people to trade meat for plant-based food, owns 242,000 acres of farmland, according to a study by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/landreport.com\/2021\/01\/bill-gates-americas-top-farmland-owner\/\">Land Report<\/a>.\u00a0North Dakotans don\u2019t want corporations squeezing out family farms and widely support a law barring them from buying up acreage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve gotten a big earful on this from clear across the state, it\u2019s not even from that neighborhood,\u201d North Dakota Agricultural Commissioner Doug Goehring told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.valleynewslive.com\/2022\/06\/21\/billionaire-buys-large-portion-nd-land-prompts-letter-attorney-general\/#:~:text=North%20Dakota%20Ag%20Commissioner%20Doug%20Goehring\">KFYR-TV<\/a>. \u201cThose people are upset, but there are others that are just livid about this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Goehring said residents feel exploited by wealthy out-of-state people who buy up land in North Dakota \u201cbut do not necessarily share the state\u2019s values.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Red River Trust chief Peter Headley previously headed an agriculture investment platform for Gates, according to the New York Post.<\/p>\n<p>Red River Trust bought Campbell Farms, a family potato farm founded in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/campbellfarms.net\/our-farms\/\">1978<\/a>\u00a0in Grafton, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.agweek.com\/business\/entity-linked-to-billionaire-bill-gates-pays-13-5-million-for-campbell-farms-north-dakota-farmland\">AG Week<\/a>. The trust has 30 days to respond to Wrigley.
