John Cornyn has in store for your Second Amendment rights, you might want to watch his other hand. He has just recently reintroduced the <a href=\"https:\/\/civxnow.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/CSD-Bill-Text-6-2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Civics Secures Democracy Act<\/a>, which would enable the federal government to impose critical race theory (CRT) \u2014 that is, state-sanctioned racism and anti-Americanism \u2014 on public school civics courses via federal grants.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the drafters of the bill are too politically savvy to explicitly endorse critical race theory. Instead, the legislation provides for $6 billion in federal grants to states, nonprofit organizations, institutions of higher education, and researchers to improve civics and American history education primarily for \u201ctraditionally underserved students\u201d (sections 102-106). The bill makes clear that grant applications must demonstrate how the applicant intends to prioritize the education of such students.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As explained in detail by Stanley Kurtz at the Ethics and Public Policy Center (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/the-greatest-education-battle-of-our-lifetimes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/bill-to-federalize-crt-must-be-stopped\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>), this anodyne-sounding terminology masks a deeply partisan agenda \u2013 an agenda that parents are fighting across the country.\u00a0Kurtz <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/bogus-civics-bill-will-push-crt-on-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reports<\/a> that while the re-introduced bill removes a previous iteration\u2019s problematic references to \u201caction civics\u201d (leftist political agitation for course credit), its central focus on \u201cunderserved\u201d students is key to how the Biden Department of Education will implement it.<\/p>\n<p>In the hive of progressive education, he explains, \u201cthe idea [of underserved students] is that recent immigrants and impoverished ethnic and racial minorities cannot embrace or excel at old-fashioned lessons on federalism or checks and balances. To truly excite and empower the underserved, you must supposedly teach about \u2018systemic racism\u2019 and recruit students into Black Lives Matter-style protests for course credit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cornyn\u2019s bill, co-sponsored by GOP Sens. Jim Inhofe and Bill Cassidy and Rep. Tom Cole, would allow Biden educrats to award great sums of money to states willing to teach this politicized dogma under the guise of civics.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not as though Cornyn is unaware of the dangers of his bill. He has surely read the warnings \u2013 including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nas.org\/blogs\/article\/an-appeal-to-senator-john-cornyn-and-congressman-tom-cole\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one<\/a> from the respected National Association of Scholars \u2013 that the bill is a Trojan horse for leftist propaganda. But rejecting the apparently inconceivable possibility that the Biden Education Department might be using him to advance its woke agenda, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/05\/03\/civics-alliance-calls-upon-sen-john-cornyn-to-withdraw-support-for-woke-education-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">misstates<\/a> the grant provisions of his own bill (mistakenly claiming that they allow no bureaucratic discretion in awarding grants) and that, in any event, there\u2019s nothing to worry about since <a href=\"https:\/\/eppc.org\/publication\/cornyn-is-mistaken-on-civics-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">his bill includes a clause saying the federal government isn\u2019t authorized to control curriculum<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is the same kind of rule that failed to block the Common Core debacle. As Kurtz <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/cornyn-is-mistaken-on-civics-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">points out,<\/a> Cornyn\u2019s CRT bill is following the same path that Common Core did, only with higher stakes. How many times will the feds manipulate well-intentioned grants to impose onerous strings and political agendas before Republican politicos catch on to the game?<\/p>\n<p>Cornyn revealed his mounting irritation with Kurtz and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.city-journal.org\/critical-race-theory-in-civics-education\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">other thoughtful observers<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JohnCornyn\/status\/1538852289028431872\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tweeting<\/a>, \u201cThe false, hysterical claims are untrue and worthy of a Russian active measures campaign, not a serious discussion of our bill.\u201d Whatever a \u201cRussian active measures campaign\u201d is (presumably something like what Hillary Clinton conjured up to derail the Trump presidency), it\u2019s clear that Kurtz and other informed critics are not the ones avoiding a \u201cserious discussion\u201d of the bill. In fact, a debate between Kurtz and the senator on the issue would be illuminating.<\/p>\n<p>Republican co-sponsor Rep. Cole of Oklahoma has offered the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/10\/20\/the-next-place-woke-bureaucrats-want-to-indoctrinate-kids-is-in-media-literacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">soothing reassurance<\/a> that he will \u201cclosely monitor\u201d Biden\u2019s education bureaucracy to make sure it doesn\u2019t gallop through the gate that he and his GOP colleagues so helpfully left open. Parents fighting CRT in their schools can take that for what it\u2019s worth.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, the most recent warnings about Cornyn\u2019s federal CRT bill seem to be getting traction among conservatives with a microphone. Radio host Mark Levin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marklevinshow.com\/2022\/06\/20\/june-20th-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">featured Kurtz on his show<\/a>, and even former President Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?521049-1\/president-trump-calls-select-committee-a-witch-hunt&#038;live=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">weighed in<\/a> when speaking to the Faith and Freedom Coalition.<\/p>\n<p>On \u201cThe Ingraham Angle,\u201d former House Speaker Newt Gingrich <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CS4jxhoC12s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">expressed<\/a> dismay that Republicans in Congress are being led down this leftist primrose path. Cornyn\u2019s bill \u201cis crazy,\u201d Gingrich said. \u201cNo Republican should be for it. \u2026 And I\u2019m frankly astonished that any Republican would agree to co-sponsor that bill, and I think it\u2019s an open invitation to further creating a totalitarian left-wing mindset where they\u2019re gonna tell us how we think, how we behave, what we\u2019re allowed to do.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI certainly hope that the handful of Republicans who are co-sponsors will withdraw their names,\u201d he concluded. \u201cAnd I hope folks back home will call them and demand that they withdraw their names.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unlikely that Cornyn and his little band of Republican collaborators are intentionally trying to smuggle leftist indoctrination material into public schools. Maybe they just haven\u2019t done their homework, or have some other political reason for going along with this dangerous charade. But whatever the excuse, their useful-idiot routine is wearing thin. Our children\u2019s educations \u2014 and therefore our country\u2019s future \u2014 are at stake.<\/p>\n<p>Supporters of the federal CRT bill hope to pass it before the August congressional recess.
