Republican Texas Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/06\/09\/john-cornyn-rules-out-gun-age\/\">John Cornyn<\/a> spearheaded the legislation in the aftermath of mass shootings at a Buffalo, New York supermarket and a Uvalde, Texas elementary school. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/06\/17\/john-cornyn-heckled-texas-republican-party-gun-control\/\">(RELATED: Sen. The laws, also known as extreme risk protection orders, will be instituted at the state level. Individuals subject to the orders are <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/06\/22\/red-flag-law-no-right-to-government-provided-lawyer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">not guaranteed<\/a> attorneys for their court appearances, since the orders are pursued under civil proceedings. More than 72% of Republicans believe red flag laws could be abused by the government, a poll <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/06\/22\/republicans-independents-fear-red-flag-laws-will-be-abused-by-government-poll\/\">conducted<\/a> by The Trafalgar Group shortly before the Senate vote found.<\/p>\n<p>The bill also closes the so-called \u201cboyfriend loophole,\u201d which allows individuals convicted of domestic violence-related offenses to retain the right to own guns if they are not married to the victim or do not live with their victim or the child of their victim. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.murphy.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/bipartisan_safer_communities_act_text.pdf\">Bipartisan Safer Communities Act<\/a> expands the ban to individuals in a \u201c<span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">current<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">or<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">recent<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">former<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">dating<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">relationship<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">with the victim.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is expected to bring the legislation up for a vote before the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.house.gov\/legislative-activity\">lower chamber<\/a> departs for recess.
