That sounds like a painful transition, so how much of that kind of pain is the president ok with?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, that transition \u2014 we are in a transition to clean energy,\u201d Jean-Pierre replied. \u201cThat is something that is important. It is going to create jobs when you think about electric vehicles. It is going to give \u2014 give families some tax credits, it\u2019s gonna be really important to have \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now they can\u2019t afford an electric car, the average price is $61,000,\u201d Doocy pushed back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, we\u2019re going to continue to move forward with what we have put for the bipartisan infrastructure \u2014\u201d Jean-Pierre tried again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive dollar a gallon gas or a $61,000 electric car \u2014\u201d Doocy interrupted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not \u2014 first of all \u2014 that\u2019s apples and oranges, it\u2019s not the same,\u201d Jean-Pierre objected. \u201cWhat we\u2019re trying to do right now is to deal with an acute problem right now, which is why the president again asked for a 90-day suspension of the gas tax, the gas tax holiday. It is going to make a difference, Peter, we\u2019re talking about $0.18 on the federal level, we\u2019re talking about an average of $0.30 on the state level, and if the oil refinery does their job, if they do what we are asking them to do which is put their profits back in so that gas prices can go down, that\u2019s almost a dollar per gallon. That matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Critics of the move have argued that a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailywire.com\/news\/democratic-senator-not-a-yes-right-now-on-bidens-proposed-gas-tax-holiday\/\">gas tax holiday<\/a> \u2014 especially if the federal government acts alone \u2014 will do little to ease the pain at the pump. If that tax holiday saves consumers $0.18 per gallon, that adds up to a savings of $2.70 for the average 15-gallon tank. At $5 per gallon, a 15-gallon fill-up costs $75 \u2014 meaning the consumer still pays $72.30 for a tank of gas.
