He hinted to The Wall Street Journal earlier this year that crime rates may have prompted his decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf people aren\u2019t safe here, they\u2019re not going to live here,\u201d he told the outlet. \u201cI\u2019ve had multiple colleagues mugged at gunpoint. I\u2019ve had a colleague stabbed on the way to work. Countless issues of burglary. I mean, that\u2019s a really difficult backdrop with which to draw talent to your city from.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under the leadership of Mayor <a href=\"http:\/\/dailywire.com\/topic\/lori-lightfoot\">Lori Lightfoot<\/a> (D-IL), the city of Chicago <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/lightfoots-chicago-records-797-homicides-in-2021-most-among-u-s-cities\">recorded 797 homicides<\/a> in 2021 \u2014 the highest of any American city.<\/p>\n<p>Lightfoot\u2019s office acknowledged that Citadel\u2019s move is by no means a positive development. \u201cWe thank the Citadel team for their contributions to our city and their many philanthropic commitments, particularly around education, arts and culture and public safety,\u201d a statement said. \u201cOur economic outlook has never been stronger and we will continue to build upon a best-in-class recovery in the nation amongst large U.S. cities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, Griffin is heavily involved in philanthropy and owns over $1 billion in residential real estate, The Wall Street Journal reports. Citadel manages over $51 billion in investment capital, according to its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citadel.com\/about-citadel\/\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The office of Governor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/j-b-pritzker\">J.B. Pritzker<\/a> (D-IL) \u2014 with whom Griffin has feuded \u2014 said in a statement that \u201ccountless companies\u201d are still choosing to operate in Illinois.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will continue to welcome those businesses \u2014 including Kellogg, which just this week announced it is moving its largest headquarters to Illinois \u2014 and support emerging industries that are already creating good jobs and investing billions in Illinois, like data centers, electric vehicles and quantum computing,\u201d Pritzker spokeswoman Emily Bittner said in a statement to The Wall Street Journal.<\/p>\n<p>Citadel is the third major company to move its headquarters out of Chicago in the past two months, following earlier decisions from construction machinery maker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcchicago.com\/news\/local\/caterpillar-inc-to-move-global-headquarters-out-of-chicago-area-into-texas\/2857142\/\">Caterpillar<\/a> and airplane manufacturer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/joewalsh\/2022\/05\/05\/boeing-will-move-headquarters-from-chicago-to-dc-metro-area\/?sh=2ffb83d863cf\">Boeing<\/a>. The former planned a move to Irving, Texas, while the latter will relocate to Arlington, Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe it\u2019s in the best strategic interest of the company to make this move, which supports Caterpillar\u2019s strategy for profitable growth as we help our customers build a better, more sustainable world,\u201d Caterpillar CEO Jim Umpleby in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>As with employees at Citadel, investment bankers in New York City \u2014 which also struggles with rising crime \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/bankers-are-begging-their-employers-for-transfers-from-new-york-to-florida\">overwhelmed<\/a> recruiters\u2019 offices last summer with requests for moves to Florida. Meanwhile, one Disney executive cited Florida\u2019s \u201cbusiness-friendly climate\u201d when announcing plans to relocate 2,000 employees from California to the Sunshine State \u2014 but was forced to delay those plans amid the entertainment giant\u2019s battle with Governor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/ron-desantis\">Ron DeSantis<\/a> (R-FL) over parental rights legislation.<\/p>\n<p>Florida saw the largest net domestic migration between July 2020 and July 2021, with over 220,000 residents moving to the state, according to the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2021\/2021-population-estimates.html\">Census Bureau<\/a>.
