Lower courts said that only North Carolina&#8217;s Democratic attorney general could defend the law. The NAACP challenged the law, Senate Bill 824, in court, saying it burdens minority voters, though <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rasmussenreports.com\/public_content\/lifestyle\/general_lifestyle\/march_2021\/75_support_voter_id_laws\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">69 percent of black Americans support voter ID requirements<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While the National Conference of State Legislatures classifies the law as &#8220;non-strict,&#8221; North Carolina Democrats blasted the photo identification provision as an attack on democracy. Voter ID laws are even stricter in neighboring states like Kentucky and Tennessee. The North Carolina law allows residents to vote without an ID through a provisional ballot, which is counted if they present identification at a later time.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats last year expressed similar fears over voter ID laws in Georgia after Republican governor Brian Kemp enacted ID requirements for mail-in ballots. Many worried about their future electoral chances.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m pretty well convinced that it&#8217;s going to hurt Democrats significantly in the long run,&#8221; Brian Fallon, cofounder and executive director of \u00a0the left-wing group Demand Justice, told <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/07\/26\/democrats-gop-voting-laws-crisis-500726\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Politico<\/a><\/em> in 2021. &#8220;There&#8217;s definitely no combination of lawsuits or Biden remaining popular or voter registration that&#8217;s going to overcome that, so I think it&#8217;s pretty bleak.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ns\u00e9 Ufot, CEO of the Stacey Abrams-founded New Georgia Project, said if Democrats are unable to &#8220;repeat what happened in November 2020, we&#8217;re f\u2014ed.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>North Carolina lawmakers have the power to protect the state&#8217;s voter identification requirement, the Supreme Court ruled on Thursday.
