Bruen<\/a><\/em>. Thursday\u2019s decision is the widest expansion of gun rights in more than a decade, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/supreme-court-strikes-down-new-york-law-on-concealed-weapons-11655995248?mod=hp_lead_pos1\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In reaction, Kamala Harris tweeted, \u201cToday\u2019s Supreme Court ruling on guns is deeply troubling as it defies commonsense and the Constitution. Lives are at stake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongress should pass the bipartisan gun safety proposal immediately and continue to do more to protect our communities,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Today&#8217;s Supreme Court ruling on guns is deeply troubling as it defies commonsense and the Constitution. Congress should pass the bipartisan gun safety proposal immediately and continue to do more to protect our communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Vice President Kamala Harris (@VP) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VP\/status\/1540021364849053700?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 23, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Harris\u2019 comments echoed President Joe Biden\u2019s reaction to the decision.<\/p>\n<p>Thursday morning, Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/biden-deeply-troubled-over-supreme-court-ruling-upholding-second-amendment\">released a statement<\/a> saying\u00a0that he was \u201cdeeply disappointed\u201d in the court for its decision in the case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis ruling contradicts both common sense and the Constitution, and should deeply trouble us all,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Biden concluded by calling \u201cAmericans across the country to make their voices heard on gun safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLives are on the line,\u201d he warned.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Clarence Thomas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-scotus-strikes-down-new-york-concealed-carry-restrictions-restrictions\">wrote<\/a> the opinion and argued that New York\u2019s requirement that citizens must demonstrate a need for concealed carry was unconstitutional.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know of no other constitutional right that an individual may exercise only after demonstrating to government officers some special need. That is not how the First Amendment works when it comes to unpopular speech or the free exercise of religion,\u201d Thomas wrote. \u201cIt is not how the Sixth Amendment works when it comes to a defendant\u2019s right to confront the witnesses against him. And it is not how the Second Amendment works when it comes to public carry for self-defense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The court also found that the law violated the 14th amendment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew York\u2019s proper-cause requirement violates the Fourteenth Amendment in that it prevents law-abiding citizens with ordinary self-defense needs from exercising their right to keep and bear arms,\u201d Thomas wrote.<\/p>\n<p>While Harris may have thought the decision was in defiance of the Constitution, others praised the ruling.<\/p>\n<p>House Republican Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) tweeted, \u201cThe Supreme Court makes it clear: Stripping law-abiding citizens of their 2nd Amendment rights is unconstitutional.
