Bruen<\/a><\/em>. The court heard oral arguments in the case in November, and the court\u2019s conservative majority appeared to lean toward dismissing New York\u2019s restrictions at the time. Thursday\u2019s decision is the widest expansion of gun rights in more than a decade, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/supreme-court-strikes-down-new-york-law-on-concealed-weapons-11655995248?mod=hp_lead_pos1\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/06\/23\/statement-by-president-joe-biden-on-supreme-court-ruling-on-guns\/\">issued<\/a> a statement saying that he was \u201cdeeply disappointed\u201d in the court for its decision in the case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis ruling contradicts both common sense and the Constitution, and should deeply trouble us all,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The president appealed to recent acts of gun violence as evidence as to why New York\u2019s law is needed while claiming that SCOTUS\u2019 ruling endangers lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the wake of the horrific attacks in Buffalo and Uvalde, as well as the daily acts of gun violence that do not make national headlines, we must do more as a society \u2014 not less \u2014 to protect our fellow Americans,\u201d Biden claimed. \u201cI remain committed to doing everything in my power to reduce gun violence and make our communities safer. I have already taken more executive actions to reduce gun violence than any other President during their first year in office, and I will continue to do all that I can to protect Americans from gun violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The president also encouraged states to \u201cenact and enforce commonsense laws to make their citizens and communities safer from gun violence,\u201d while noting that \u201cthe Second Amendment is not absolute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor centuries, states have regulated who may purchase or possess weapons, the types of weapons they may use, and the places they may carry those weapons,\u201d the president continued. \u201cAnd the courts have upheld these regulations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biden concluded by calling \u201cAmericans across the country to make their voices heard on gun safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLives are on the line,\u201d he warned.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Clarence Thomas wrote the opinion and argued that New York\u2019s requirement that citizens must demonstrate a need for concealed carry was unconstitutional.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know of no other constitutional right that an individual may exercise only after demonstrating to government officers some special need. That is not how the First Amendment works when it comes to unpopular speech or the free exercise of religion,\u201d Thomas wrote. \u201cIt is not how the Sixth Amendment works when it comes to a defendant\u2019s right to confront the witnesses against him. And it is not how the Second Amendment works when it comes to public carry for self-defense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The court also found that the law violated the 14th amendment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew York\u2019s proper-cause requirement violates the Fourteenth Amendment in that it prevents law-abiding citizens with ordinary self-defense needs from exercising their right to keep and bear arms,\u201d Thomas wrote.<\/p>\n<p>New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D) also condemned the ruling, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-scotus-strikes-down-new-york-concealed-carry-restrictions-restrictions\">saying<\/a>, \u201cIt is outrageous that at a moment of national reckoning on gun violence, the Supreme Court has recklessly struck down a New York law that limits those who can carry concealed weapons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Tim Pearce contributed to this report.<\/p>\n<p><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Joe Biden admonished the Supreme Court of the United States on Thursday for its ruling striking down the state of New York\u2019s restrictions on concealed carry firearms permits.
