But at a time of war, refinery profit margins well above normal being passed directly onto American families are not acceptable,\u201d Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/news\/read-bidens-full-letter-to-oil-companies-demanding-help-on-gas-prices-historically-high-profit-margins-are-unacceptable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s letter concluded with a plea for help from America\u2019s oil companies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI request that you provide the Secretary with an explanation of any reduction in your refining capacity since 2020, and any ideas that would address the immediate inventory, price, and refining capacity issues in the coming months \u2014 including transportation measures to get refined product to market,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not the first time the Democrat has not reflexively supported the president\u2019s agenda. In May, Manchin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/democrat-joe-manchin-to-oppose-partys-abortion-bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> his plan to vote against his party\u2019s abortion bill, stating that it goes too far, though he claimed he would support a codification of\u00a0<em>Roe v. Wade.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Women\u2019s Health Protection Act, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/house-bill\/3755\/text\">bill<\/a> blocked in a February vote, was blocked again in May after all 50 Republicans and Manchin opposed the proposal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to be voting for a piece of legislation that I will not be voting for today,\u201d Manchin told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I would vote for a\u00a0<em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>\u00a0codification if it was today. I was hopeful for that, but I found out yesterday in caucus that that wasn\u2019t going to be,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Manchin was also opposed to Biden\u2019s Build Back Better legislation. In December, the West Virginia Democrat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manchin.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/manchin-statement-on-build-back-better-act\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>, \u201cI have always said, \u2018If I can\u2019t go back home and explain it, I can\u2019t vote for it.\u2019 Despite my best efforts, I cannot explain the sweeping Build Back Better Act in West Virginia and I cannot vote to move forward on this mammoth piece of legislation.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At least one Democratic senator has signaled he\u2019s currently not on board with President Joe Biden\u2019s plan to call for a federal gas tax holiday.
