Tommy Tuberville<\/a> (R-AL) is warning that President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/joe-biden\">Joe Biden\u2019s administration<\/a> is hacking away at women\u2019s progress in the name of gender equality.<\/p>\n<p>Passed as part of the Education Amendments of 1972 and signed by President Richard Nixon on June 23, 1972, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/crt\/title-ix\">Title IX<\/a> prohibits sex-based discrimination in schools or education programs that receive federal funding. The move opened up many opportunities for women and girls to achieve in both academics and in sports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from the participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance,\u201d read the rule, co-authored by former Democratic Hawaii Rep. Patsy Matsu Mink, the\u00a0first woman of color elected to Congress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dIt\u2019s rare as a legislator that you fight for legislation you believe in and stay around or live long enough to see it come to fruition,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2002\/09\/30\/us\/patsy-mink-veteran-hawaii-congresswoman-dies-at-74.html\">said Mink in 1995<\/a> as she met with top U.S. female basketball players. The former congresswoman passed away in 2002.<\/p>\n<p>But the Biden administration recently announced plans to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/education\/2022\/03\/30\/transgender-discrimination-title-ix-rule-students\/\">redefine sex<\/a> to include \u201csex stereotypes, sex-related characteristics (including intersex traits), pregnancy or related conditions, sexual orientation, and gender identity.\u201d This would ban discrimination based on gender identity, indicating that schools would be prevented from prohibiting biological males from participating in women\u2019s sports.<\/p>\n<p>And critics like Tuberville say the move directly contradicts the good accomplished for women through Title IX.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe federal government, you know, we don\u2019t get a lot right,\u201d Tuberville, who coached Auburn University football for almost a decade, said during a phone interview with The Daily Wire. \u201cBut they got it right when they passed Title IX.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Alabama senator shared that he also previously coached girls high school basketball before his career as a football coach, saying that the Biden administration\u2019s efforts will\u00a0\u201cbe devastating to women\u2019s sports.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And most Americans won\u2019t agree with this move, he added, suggesting that leftist activists and policy makers are focused on gender identity and \u201cwant everybody to kind of be pretty much the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re trying to destroy the family,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd so expanding the definition of sex is right up their alley, and by allowing biological males to compete in women\u2019s sports, I think that\u2019s trying to degrade women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Cowart, an academic coach who grew up playing sports in Alabama in middle and high school, told The Daily Wire that she started a girls soccer team in high school because her only other option was to play on the boys soccer team \u2014 and she knew that she wouldn\u2019t stand a chance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t going to get playing time just because I knew the difference of my size, their size, their skill and speed. It just wasn\u2019t going to happen. I wasn\u2019t going to play,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd so I think that\u2019s what we saw when we were able to start the women\u2019s soccer team in high school that afforded us the opportunity to be on the same playing field with our peers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you go up against them, you are playing the hardest that you can,\u201d Cowart explained. \u201cAnd when you\u2019re trying [your] hardest and you\u2019re playing your hardest, but you still aren\u2019t being successful, that kills your spirit and thinking, well, I just can\u2019t do this at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cowart celebrated that Title IX had bestowed on her and her teammates the freedom to create and lead such a team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think about it from a standpoint of accessibility,\u201d she continued. \u201cHad we not come together as girls, at our age, we wouldn\u2019t have had that opportunity. We would have had to end up playing with the guys team on a JV level again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Controversy over biological males in women\u2019s sports has escalated as transgender swimmer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/lia-thomas\">Lia Thomas<\/a>, a biological male, competed in the NCAA Women\u2019s Swimming and Diving Championships this spring, annihilating competitors in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/biologically-male-swimmer-annihilates-female-competitors-in-500-free\">women\u2019s 500 freestyle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, the International Swimming Federation (FINA), issued new restrictions on transgender swimmers, stating that only transgender swimmers who transitioned from male to female before age 12 may compete in women\u2019s events.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very hopeful about it,\u201d an anonymous teammate of Thomas told The Daily Wire on Tuesday of the new restrictions. That teammate was granted anonymity out of fear of backlash.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am incredibly happy that Lia Thomas will never be an Olympic gold medalist. I think that\u2019s great. But this doesn\u2019t actually fix the NCAA [National Collegiate Athletic Association],\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Both Thomas\u2019 teammate and Riley Gaines, a University of Kentucky swimmer, said that they wish the NCAA would rescind\u00a0Thomas\u2019 championship title.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe Lia is not the fastest female in the 500-yard freestyle, therefore I don\u2019t think she should be awarded as a female national champion,\u201d Gaines told The Daily Wire, adding that the NCAA<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON \u2014 Ahead of the 50th anniversary of the Title IX federal civil rights law, Sen.
