President Biden is asking for a suspension of the tax through September without interruptions to the $10 billion required to bankroll the Highway Trust Fund.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Biden understands that high gas prices pose a significant challenge for working families,\u201d a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/06\/22\/fact-sheet-president-biden-calls-for-a-three-month-federal-gas-tax-holiday\/\">White House<\/a> statement said. \u201cToday, he is calling on Congress and states to take additional legislative action to provide direct relief to American consumers who have been hit with Putin\u2019s Price Hike.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Combined with state taxes, the average American driver pays $0.571 in gas taxes per gallon, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.api.org\/oil-and-natural-gas\/consumer-information\/motor-fuel-taxes\/gasoline-tax\">American Petroleum Institute<\/a>. While New York and Connecticut temporarily paused their gas taxes in response to the soaring energy prices, Illinois and Colorado delayed scheduled tax and fee hikes, according to the White House statement.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, Treasury Secretary <a href=\"http:\/\/dailywire.com\/topic\/janet-yellen\">Janet Yellen<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/yellen-gives-opinion-on-pausing-federal-gas-tax-to-bring-prices-down\">told<\/a> ABC News host George Stephanopoulos that pausing the federal gas tax was on the table for the Biden administration. \u201cGas prices have risen a great deal, and it\u2019s clearly burdening households. So he stands ready to work with Congress, and that\u2019s an idea that\u2019s certainly worth considering,\u201d Yellen said of President Biden.<\/p>\n<p>Gas prices are currently $4.96 per gallon, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/\">AAA<\/a>. Earlier this month, gas prices <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/gas-prices-hit-grim-national-average-of-5-per-gallon\">hit<\/a> $5.00 per gallon, rising from the $2.39 per gallon witnessed when Biden took office.<\/p>\n<p>Along with the proposed gas tax suspension, however, the White House clarified that \u201cour efforts to increase energy production in the near-term must be coupled with medium- and long-term efforts to transition our economy away from fossil fuels produced by autocrats and to clean energy.\u201d Likewise, Yellen said on Sunday that \u201cthe way in which we can ensure reasonable energy expenses for households is to move to renewables, to address climate change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In recent months, multiple White House officials \u2014 including Transportation Secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/buttigieg-electric-cars-will-make-it-so-americans-never-have-to-worry-about-gas-prices-again\">Pete Buttigieg<\/a>, Energy Secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/bidens-energy-secretary-on-gas-crisis-if-you-drove-an-electric-car-this-would-not-be-affecting-you\">Jennifer Granholm<\/a>, and President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/white-house-slammed-over-comments-on-electric-cars-fairy-dust-and-unicorns\">Joe Biden<\/a> himself \u2014 have even argued that high prices for nonrenewable energy will accelerate a transition to green energy, especially as more Americans buy electric cars.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, multiple Republican lawmakers have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cruz.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/cruz-senators-demand-commerce-secretary-stop-permitting-delays-on-existing-oil-and-gas-leases-to-boost-production\">criticized<\/a> Biden for a \u201cde facto ban on new drilling\u201d achieved by \u201csitting idle on over 9,000 drilling permits\u201d and millions of acres of inactive leases. Likewise, the White House faced backlash last year for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/peter-doocy-asks-for-a-straight-answer-on-keystone-gets-the-runaround-from-jen-psaki\">revoking<\/a> a permit for the Keystone XL Pipeline.
