Along with Yale Law School diversity director Yaseen Eldik, Cosgrove\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/campus\/a-yale-law-student-sent-a-lighthearted-email-inviting-classmates-to-his-trap-house-the-school-is-now-calling-him-to-account\/\">hinted<\/a> to second-year law student Trent Colbert that he could face disciplinary consequences if he didn&#8217;t apologize for inviting classmates to his &#8220;trap house,&#8221; a term she and Eldik characterized as racist. Without an apology, Cosgrove implied in a September meeting, Colbert might have trouble with the bar exam&#8217;s &#8220;character and fitness&#8221; investigations, which she could weigh in on as associate dean.<\/p>\n<p>The law school found itself doing <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/campus\/damage-control-yale-law-school-scrubs-administrator-profiles-from-website\/\">damage control<\/a> after the <i>Washington Free Beacon <\/i>published <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/campus\/listen-to-yale-law-school-administrators-tell-a-student-his-affiliation-with-the-federalist-society-is-triggering-for-classmates\/\">audio<\/a> of the meeting\u2014and after figures across the political spectrum slammed Cosgrove and Eldik for chilling free speech. The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefire.org\/how-yale-law-school-pressured-a-law-student-to-apologize-for-a-constitution-day-trap-house-invitation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">likened <\/a>the meeting to a mafia shakedown; Ruth Marcus, the deputy editorial page editor of the <i>Washington Post<\/i>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2021\/10\/14\/yale-law-school-party-invitation-trap-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">likened<\/a> it to Mao&#8217;s Cultural Revolution. Writing in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2021\/10\/yale-law-diversity-bureaucrats-made-five-mistakes\/620428\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The\u00a0Atlantic<\/em><\/a>, Conor Friedersdorf called Eldik and Cosgrove&#8217;s behavior &#8220;unethical, discreditable, and clearly incompatible with key values that the elite law school purports to uphold.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It was one of three scandals to beset Cosgrove over just the past year. In November 2021, Cosgrove, Eldik, and Gerken <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/campus\/yale-law-students-sue-administrators-for-violation-of-harassment-policies\/\">were hit with a lawsuit<\/a> alleging that they retaliated against &#8220;two students of color&#8221; for refusing to make &#8220;false statements&#8221; about Amy Chua, a professor who has repeatedly ruffled the administration&#8217;s feathers. And in March 2022, Cosgrove <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/campus\/hundreds-of-yale-law-students-disrupt-bipartisan-free-speech-event\/\">looked on<\/a> as hundreds of student protesters disrupted a bipartisan panel on civil liberties.
