As Russia blockades the Black Sea with ships and sea mines, thereby preventing Ukrainian exports, some Western officials have accused Russia of holding people in the developing world hostage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou cannot use the hunger of people as a weapon of war,\u201d Joseph Borrell, the European Union\u2019s high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eeas.europa.eu\/eeas\/foreign-affairs-council-press-remarks-high-representative-josep-borrell-upon-arrival-2_en\">said<\/a> to other diplomats this week. \u201cMillions of tons of wheat remain blocked in Ukraine while in the rest of the world people are suffering hunger. This is a real war crime, so I cannot imagine that this will last much longer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nearly half of <a href=\"http:\/\/dailywire.com\/topic\/africa\">African<\/a> wheat imports come from Russia and Ukraine, with some nations importing \u201cmore than one third of their wheat from the two countries,\u201d according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/unctad.org\/system\/files\/official-document\/osginf2022d1_en.pdf\">United Nations<\/a> report released in March. Some countries \u2014 such as Egypt, Somalia, and Benin \u2014 import more than 80% of their wheat from Russia and Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>However, the potential for trade between African nations to replace the imports is \u201ccomparatively small\u201d due to the continent\u2019s low crop production, while \u201cmany parts of the continent lack efficient transport infrastructures and storage capacity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even beyond Africa, Russia and Ukraine send 26% of their exports to Turkey, 23% to China, and 13% to India. Rising global food prices may contribute to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/biden-claims-inflation-is-worse-everywhere-but-here-thats-not-even-close-to-true\">worldwide inflationary pressures<\/a>, according to the United Nations.<\/p>\n<p>Many officials are now calling upon the United States to increase agricultural exports to supplement the lost shipments from Russia and Ukraine. International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/during-world-economic-forum-imf-leader-calls-for-america-to-increase-food-exports-amid-dire-global-food-shortages\">said<\/a> at the World Economic Forum last month that global food shortages represent a \u201cdire\u201d situation and therefore recommended \u201copenness in exports of food,\u201d refraining from \u201cfood restrictions,\u201d and not buying \u201cmore food than you need for your own country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, the Biden administration vowed ahead of the Summit of the Americas to provide another $331 million in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/biden-commits-to-fighting-food-shortages-in-latin-america\">food security and humanitarian<\/a> aid for Latin American nations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis contribution will complement the United States\u2019 existing commitment to providing life-saving humanitarian assistance, responding to acute food insecurity, and advancing capacity-building activities that bolster disaster preparedness and response\u201d across Latin America and the Caribbean, a White House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/06\/09\/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-announces-commitments-to-advance-food-security-in-the-western-hemisphere\/\">statement<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p>East African nations like Kenya and Ethiopia were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/asian-african-nations-face-famine-as-ukraine-crisis-hits-global-food-supply\">already struggling with drought<\/a> and related livestock deaths before the added threat to the global food supply.
