Makin<\/em>, SCOTUS ruled 6-3 along ideological lines that the state of Maine\u2019s tuition assistance program, which barred guardians from using the funds for private religious education, was unconstitutional as it violated the First Amendment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBREAKING: U.S. Supreme Court just ruled in a 6-3 decision that preventing school choice families from taking their children\u2019s taxpayer-funded education dollars to religious private schools violated the Free Exercise Clause of the 1st Amendment,\u201d school choice proponent Corey DeAngelis tweeted.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">BREAKING: U.S. Supreme Court just ruled in a 6-3 decision that preventing school choice families from taking their children&#39;s taxpayer-funded education dollars to religious private schools violated the Free Exercise Clause of the 1st Amendment.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Corey A. DeAngelis (@DeAngelisCorey) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DeAngelisCorey\/status\/1539258055430443014?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 21, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Prior to oral arguments last spring, SCOTUS Blog <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scotusblog.com\/2021\/12\/separation-of-church-and-school-justices-will-weigh-maines-ban-on-funds-for-religious-education\/\">explained<\/a> that the case was brought by two families who wanted \u201cto send their children to Christian schools in the state\u201d and asked for the help of Maine\u2019s tuition assistance program. Those plaintiffs argued \u201cthat the state\u2019s exclusion of schools that provide religious instruction from the program violates the Constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough the justices\u2019 ruling will directly affect fewer than 5,000 students in Maine, the court\u2019s eventual decision could have a significant impact on public funding for religious education well beyond the state\u2019s border,\u201d SCOTUS Blog also noted.<\/p>\n<p>For its part, Maine argued that allowing tax dollars to go toward private schools, such as certain Christian schools, could trample upon the idea that \u201ca public education is both defined by inclusion and tolerance, and reflective of the diversity of our students and our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>SCOTUS Blog noted that one of the schools in question hired only born-again Christians and had an anti-LGBTQ educational agenda, and as a result, the state was not required \u00a0to \u201cfund their educational program as the substantive equivalent of a public education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court disagreed with those arguments. Now, supporters of parents\u2019 rights, religious freedom, and school choice see the victory as monumental in its potential ramifications across the country.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This is huge.
