This is as it should be,\u201d World Athletics president Lord Sebastian Coe stated in response to the FINA decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have always believed, and repeated constantly, that biology trumps gender and we will continue to review our regulations in line with this,\u201d he continued, as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/athletics\/61865789\">BBC<\/a> reported. \u201cWe continue to study, research and contribute to the growing body of evidence that testosterone is a key determinant in performance, and have scheduled a discussion on our regulations with our council at the end of the year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve always tried to find a navigable way through,\u201d Coe, a four-time Olympic medal winner who remains the only man to ever to win successive Olympic 1500m titles, said. \u201cWe haven\u2019t wanted to stigmatize.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut when push comes to shove, if it\u2019s a judgement between inclusion and fairness, we will always fall down on the side of fairness \u2014 that for me is non-negotiable,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe integrity of women\u2019s sport is really, really important here, and we can\u2019t have a generation of young girls thinking there is not a future for them in the sport. So we have a responsibility\u2026maintaining the primacy and the integrity of female competition is absolutely vital, and that\u2019s why we were at the forefront of tabling those regulations that allow as close as you can get to a level playing field.\u00a0 Those regulations are always under review\u2026 if there are events, distances or disciplines that we think are being unfairly impacted we will of course look at those again in the light of the science.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\".11qfuaoneau.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-20\"><span data-reactid=\".11qfuaoneau.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-20.0\">\u201cAnd I\u2019ve always made it clear: if we ever get pushed into a corner to that point where we\u2019re making a judgement about fairness or inclusion, I will always fall down on the side of fairness,\u201d Coe asserted, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sport\/sportsnews\/article-10934773\/World-Athletics-president-Sebastian-Coe-backs-FINAs-ruling-transgender-athletes-banned.html\">The Daily Mail<\/a> reported. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to and that\u2019s my responsibility. Of course, it\u2019s a societal issue. If one of my colleagues here in my team suddenly becomes transgender, it doesn\u2019t make a difference to me. They will continue to do the same job with skill and aplomb in exactly the way they were before they made that transition. This is not possible in sport. It is fundamental to performance and integrity and that, for me, is the big, big difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Coe noted some organizations feared getting hit with lawsuits if they took a stance against transgender participation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve spent $1,000,000 [on legal fees related to DSD],\u201d he revealed. \u201cWe\u2019re not FIFA but we\u2019re not bereft. But there are other sports that are genuinely fearful that, if they go down that road, they\u2019ll bankrupt themselves defending this. So it\u2019s not that easy for us to just sit there and say, \u2018Well, some sports are sort of tiptoeing around it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reality of it is it\u2019s quite an outlay and they\u2019ve also got limited data and research,\u201d he noted. \u201cThe International Olympic Committee created the framework, which said that nobody should be making these decisions unless you\u2019ve got 10 years of longitudinal study. Well we have.
