Using the state\u2019s budget surplus to hold off on the tax is up for debate, but some leading Democratic legislators aren\u2019t going for that option.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThey think it\u2019s possible that gas suppliers could eat up those savings and not pass them on to consumers. And also because they went through a very, very harrowing political battle when they passed this gas tax increase back in 2017,\u201d Emily Hoeven, writer at CalMatters, said, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcrw.com\/news\/shows\/press-play-with-madeleine-brand\/drivers-woman-ochre-watergate-film-reviews\/ca-gas-tax-rebate-debit-cards-checks\">KCRW<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">California Governor Gavin Newsom has pushed for a proposal to send $400 cards to California drivers to help with the costs, but the measure hasn\u2019t gotten support in the Democrat-controlled state legislature. However, Hoeven noted that some legislators aren\u2019t in favor of Newsom\u2019s strategy and would rather give $200 checks to people based on income level.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThey say that leaves out the most vulnerable Californians, people who may not be able to afford a car and people that rely on public transit, and people that are feeling price hikes for groceries and other things in life,\u201d Hoeven said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The average price of gasoline in the county is currently $4.98, as of June 20, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/\">AAA<\/a>. In California, the average is almost $6.34.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Californians have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/california-gas-station-approaches-8-per-gallon\">struggling<\/a> under high gas prices for some time, due in part to California\u2019s excessive regulations placed on gas producers and importers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As The Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2022\/06\/20\/gas-prices-by-state-explained\/\">reported<\/a>, California\u2019s Air Resource Board has specific rules for chemicals such as benzene, formaldehyde, and sulfur, which impacts how gas importers and producers can operate. Due to the red tape, California brings in a lot of gas from the Middle East, Patrick De Haan, GasBuddy\u2019s head of petroleum analysis, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2022\/06\/20\/gas-prices-by-state-explained\/\">said<\/a>, per the outlet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The cost of diesel in the state is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/california-decides-this-is-a-great-time-to-raise-the-state-gasoline-tax\/\">putting<\/a> pressure on industries and consumers. The current average in California is $6.99, and diesel is already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdtfa.ca.gov\/taxes-and-fees\/sales-tax-rates-for-fuels.htm\">taxed<\/a> at 13% in the Golden State.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Over the weekend, gas costs went <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7.com\/gas-prices-southern-california-los-angeles-county-orange\/11977673\/\">down<\/a> minimally in areas around the state. In L.A.
