That was a joke, but all kidding aside, I don\u2019t think it is,\u201d Biden responded.<\/p>\n<p>The exchange came after a Wall Street Journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/recession-probability-soars-as-inflation-worsens-11655631002?mod=hp_lead_pos1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">survey<\/a> of a group of economists reported on Sunday that the odds of the nation entering a recession in the next 12 months rank at 44%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForecasters have raised recession probability due to a number of factors: higher borrowing costs, a blistering\u00a0pace of inflation, supply-chain problems and commodity-price shocks stemming from the war in Ukraine,\u201d the report stated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMostly, however, they see dimming chances that a steeper path of rate increases by the Fed can cool inflation without inducing higher unemployment and an economic downturn,\u201d the Wall Street Journal added.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to record-breaking gas prices and high inflation, the nation\u2019s gross domestic product (GDP) declined by 1.5% during the first quarter of 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe U.S. economic contraction to start the year was worse than expected as weak business and private investment failed to offset strong consumer spending, the Commerce Department reported Thursday,\u201d CNBC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/money\/markets\/first-quarter-gdp-declined-15-25-worse-than-thought-jobless-claims-climb\/ar-AAXKVmD?ocid=uxbndlbing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> last month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst-quarter GDP declined at a 1.5% annual pace, according to the second estimate from the Bureau of Economic Analysis. That was worse than the 1.3% Dow Jones estimate and a writedown from the initially reported 1.4%,\u201d the report added.<\/p>\n<p>CEOs of some of the nation\u2019s largest companies have also expressed concern regarding a coming recession.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat hurricane is right out there, down the road, coming our way. We just don\u2019t know if it is a minor one, or Superstorm Sandy, or Andrew, or something like that. And you better brace yourself,\u201d JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon recently said about a coming recession, NPR <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/06\/14\/1104601336\/recession-inflation-federal-reserve-ceos-elon-musk-jamie-dimon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla CEO Elon Musk wants to slash 10% of jobs at the company due to his \u201csuper bad feeling\u201d about the economy, according to a Friday report from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/exclusive-musk-says-tesla-needs-cut-staff-by-10-pauses-all-hiring-2022-06-03\/\">Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The United States economy shrank at a 1.5% annualized rate in the first quarter of 2022, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bea.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2022-05\/gdp1q22_2nd.pdf\">Bureau of Economic Analysis<\/a>, which associates recessions with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bea.gov\/help\/glossary?title_1=All&#038;title=&#038;page=6#:~:text=The%20NBER%20recession%20is%20a,well%20as%20quarterly%20GDP%20growth.\">two consecutive quarters<\/a>\u00a0of negative growth.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent email to executives seen by Reuters, Musk instructed Tesla to \u201cpause all hiring worldwide\u201d and said that the company needs to cut 10% of jobs.
