As a political strategy, placing an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump?source=%2Fthe-worst-man-for-the-job\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inveterate fabulist<\/a> like Schiff on the committee only ensured that it wouldn\u2019t have credibility with Republicans\u2014presumably the people Democrats want to convince.<\/p>\n<p>With dwindling national interest in the proceedings, Schiff went on TV this weekend and announced that the Jan. 6 Committee was in possession of evidence that Donald Trump had hatched a \u201cfake elector plot\u201d (another scheme that had absolutely no chance of working. The more we see the evidence, the more it\u2019s apparent that the system was working). When asked to clarify his contention, Schiff said he did not \u201cwant to get ahead of our hearing.\u201d Priming your base for Trump\u2019s arrest\u2014again\u2014 is almost surely getting <em>beyond<\/em> the hearings. But then, Democrats have been overplaying the Trump hand since 2015. The Jan. 6 Committee has become a political version of \u201cLost,\u201d always a cliffhanger and never a payoff.<\/p>\n<p>What we do know is that Schiff says he has evidence he probably doesn\u2019t. Let\u2019s remember, Schiff was the one who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/rep-adam-schiff-regret-hyping-discredited-steele-dossier\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">read<\/a> the Steele Dossier, among other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/all-the-adam-schiff-transcripts-11589326164?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fabrications<\/a>, into the congressional record\u2014even though he was aware that it was a partisan oppo file paid for by the DNC and shopped by Hillary Clinton partisans with her blessing. On numerous occasions, and with great certitude, Schiff told the media that the central assertion of the dossier was not only conceivable because of Trump\u2019s words, but a fact. And not only did he famously\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/meghan-mccain-calls-out-adam-schiff-for-claiming-there-is-a-smoking-gun-for-trump-russia-collusion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claim<\/a>\u00a0to be in personal\u00a0possession of a \u201csmoking gun\u201d that would prove collusion, he said he had an \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/theguardian.com\/us-news\/2018\/feb\/14\/trump-russia-investigation-evidence-collusion-obstruction-adam-schiff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">abundance<\/a>\u201d of incriminating evidence. <\/p>\n<p>As the fake Russiagate story fizzled out, Schiff refused to share proof of a seditious, clandestine plot against America. Not in his speeches. Not in Congress. Not on CNN. Not in his self-serving memoir. When then-\u201cView\u201d co-host Meghan McCain\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/meghan-mccain-calls-out-adam-schiff-for-claiming-there-is-a-smoking-gun-for-trump-russia-collusion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">asked Schiff about it<\/a>, the congressman said it had been in \u201cplain sight\u201d the entire time, which is opposite of what he asserted previously.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, when CNN\u2019s Dana Bash hears news of Schiff\u2019s alleged new bombshell, she does not respond, \u201cYou know, the last time you promised a smoking gun it turned out to be bogus.\u201d No one at CNN, where 2016 election lies were incubated and spread, does. Jake Tapper\u2014so utterly distraught about the delegitimization of democracy that he has no compunction throwing around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/yes-big-lie-is-a-nazi-reference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nazi-era<\/a> terms like \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jaketapper\/status\/1409256664855896065\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Big Lie<\/a>\u201d and degrading the suffering of millions\u2014certainly does not.<\/p>\n<p>Schiff\u2019s lying goes beyond the political norm\u2014which, needless to say, is bad enough. This is the guy who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2019\/10\/04\/schiffs-false-claim-his-committee-had-not-spoken-whistleblower\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lied<\/a> repeatedly on national television when asked point blank if his office had contact with a whistleblower at the center of Trump\u2019s second impeachment. Turned out his office had coached Alexander Vindman.\u00a0(Not only did Devin Nunes\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/irp.fas.org\/congress\/2018_cr\/nunes-memo.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">assessment<\/a> of \u201cRussiagate\u201d turn out to be more largely accurate, so did his claims about Schiff <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-7629669\/Devin-Nunes-claims-Adam-Schiff-coached-Trump-impeachment-inquiry-witness-unprecedented-scenes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">coaching<\/a> a witness in an impeachment hearing.) <\/p>\n<p>Schiff then <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tomselliott\/status\/1177229952648761344?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1177229952648761344%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.foxnews.com%2Fmedia%2Fschiff-parody\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fabricated<\/a> dialogue between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky\u00a0and read it on the congressional floor during that impeachment trial, later claiming it was a \u201cparody.\u201d When Wolf Blitzer\u2014in a classic \u201cRepublicans pounce\u201d framing\u2014asked Schiff if he regretted lying, his <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tomselliott\/status\/1177337662547668996\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">answer<\/a> was that his fabrication was \u201call too accurate.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a healthy, functioning \u201cdemocracy,\u201d elected officials involved in plots to discredit the results of an election are denounced and saddled with repercussions. In a banana republic, they are charged with investigating others who discredit the results of elections. Whatever Trump did or didn\u2019t do, it has become insufferable watching the same people who spent four years spinning conspiracies about 2016 lecture us about the importance of honoring the outcomes of presidential elections. The committee has spent most of its time conflating what looks like completely legal, if often destructive and dumb, actions with the violence of rioting. If they have proof of sedition or of incitement or of a conspiracy or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2021\/07\/january-6-was-not-a-coup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">coup<\/a>, go\u00a0for it.
