On Feb. 12, Jill Biden tweeted on her @FLOTUS Twitter account a photo of herself, with a scrunchie in her hair, at a Washington, D.C., bakery picking up \u201cValentine\u2019s treats for the weekend.\u201d \u201cDon\u2019t tell Joe,\u201d she joked.<\/p>\n<p>Glamour magazine posted an article titled \u201cFirst Lady Jill Biden Wore a Scrunchie While Shopping and People Felt So Seen.\u201d New York Times reporter Claire Cain Miller tweeted, \u201cLoving the scrunchie energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Washington Post \u201cPowerPost\u201d headline read, \u201cScrunchies and dog walking: the country gets a taste of Jill Biden\u2019s radical normalcy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Twitter, I asked the author of this puffery, Jacqueline Alemany, \u201cWhat is \u2018radical normalcy\u2019?\u201d No reply.<\/p>\n<p>Alemany boosted the PR stunt, writing: \u201cBiden\u2019s scrunchie that really lit up the Internet. Leave it to a scrunchie to capture the zeitgeist of President Biden\u2019s promise to \u2018return to normalcy,\u2019 a stark departure from the \u2018I don\u2019t really care\u2019 message sent by Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019d begun by mocking Melania Trump and the \u201c$51,000 Dolce &amp; Gabbana multicolored floral jacket\u201d she wore in Sicily in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The most ludicrous line was this: \u201cJill Biden\u2019s laissez-faire approach to her public image and affectionate relationship with her husband may foreshadow a different approach to the traditionally staid and formal office of the first lady.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is nothing \u201claissez-faire\u201d in \u201cDr.\u201d Biden\u2019s public image. The tweet itself is carefully curated, down to the selection of a black-owned bakery. This is the way the Bidens and the Obamas use social media: to sell themselves as loving and \u201crelatable\u201d people. It\u2019s informal poses. It\u2019s campaign work. Alemany\u2019s article was just more of the sales job.<\/p>\n<p>Alemany turned to her Post colleague Mary Jordan, who authored a negative book on Melania called \u201cThe Art of Her Deal\u201d: \u201cShe\u2019d be unlikely to ever be caught dead in a scrunchie \u2014 \u2018unless it was Chanel,\u2019 Jordan joked.\u201d Jordan also crowed that \u201cMelania Trump was the most put together person and Jill comes across as a relatable mom, teacher, wife and woman \u2014 she\u2019s relatable in a way that Melania never was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She echoed that with author Kate Anderson Brower: \u201cDr. Biden has already been out and about in Washington more publicly than her predecessor was in four years,\u201d she boasted. \u201cBiden has had decades of experience being herself in public and she\u2019s obviously much more comfortable holding her husband\u2019s hand and being a demonstrably loving mother and grandmother when the world is watching. \u2026 I think we need that right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Who, precisely, is \u201cwe\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>Melania Trump began her tenure as first lady behind the eight ball. First, the liberal media always adores first ladies who are Ivy League-educated lawyers or career educators, not just \u2014 ick \u2014 wives. Second, her beauty was deployed against her: She was seen as \u201carm candy,\u201d a \u201ctrophy wife.\u201d She resisted any attempt at public affection for the cameras. Comedians mocked their marriage, insisting it was like a prison and that she wanted to claw out of it. She didn\u2019t go for magazine cover articles or go \u201cout and about in Washington,\u201d for fear of all the poison pens.<\/p>\n<p>The same media outlets who treated the Trumps\u2019 marriage as a cynical ongoing negotiation lunged to portray Bill and Hillary Clinton as an inspiring romance, a baby-boomer Belle and the Beast.<\/p>\n<p>The Bidens may be great lovers. But everything at the White House has a large degree of calculation in it.
