Florida stands with Colombian Americans on the side of freedom. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/0O7UVccH6M\">pic.twitter.com\/0O7UVccH6M<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ron DeSantis (@GovRonDeSantis) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovRonDeSantis\/status\/1538900964211564544?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 20, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the video, DeSantis noted his concern with the Colombia election\u2019s results.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe watched the election results down in Colombia and we have a lot of great Colombian Americans here in our state who were very concerned about what was going on and I think the results of that election have been very, very troubling for people that believe in freedom in the Western Hemisphere,\u201d DeSantis said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo elect a former narco-terrorist and a Marxist to lead Colombia is going to be disastrous,\u201d the governor added.<\/p>\n<p>Petro won the nation\u2019s presidency with 50.48% of the vote on Sunday, with challenger Rodolfo Hern\u00e1ndez garnering 47.26%, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/politics-ap-top-news-gustavo-petro-colombia-elections-0d60db5f1fb0c03fc413b0fbd6b5add6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a> the Associated Press.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom this government that is beginning there will never be political persecution or legal persecution, there will only be respect and dialogue,\u201d he said, according to the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast with the approach of DeSantis to speak out against the Marxist leader\u2019s victory, Secretary of State Antony Blinken released a statement claiming he is looking forward to working with Petro.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn behalf of the United States, I congratulate the people of Colombia for making their voices heard in a free and fair presidential election. We commend the many officials, public servants, and volunteers whose dedication made these elections possible,\u201d Blinken <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/the-colombian-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States and Colombia enjoy deep bonds between our peoples, shared values, and shared interests in democracy, security, inclusive economic prosperity, and human rights. Cooperation between the United States and Colombia has improved public health, livelihoods, rule of law and environmental protections in both our countries and throughout the region. We look forward to working with President-Elect Petro to further strengthen the U.S.-Colombia relationship and move our nations toward a better future,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Petro <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/petrogustavo\/status\/1538645778540937217\">called<\/a> the results a cause for celebration for the Colombian people.<\/p>\n<p>The new election result is the latest example of Latin American nations electing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/06\/20\/colombia-picks-1st-leftist-president-in-tight-runoff-contest.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leftist presidents<\/a>. In 2021, Chile, Peru, and Honduras each elected a leftist leader.
