Del Rio is trying to sell a two-bedroom home that he no longer lives in, and was shocked to discover that his electricity bill was $630 this month instead of the typical $150. In addition to his account already being charged the higher amount, Del Rio has been told he owes an additional $2,600.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf worse comes to worst, I have the ability to put it on a credit card or figure something out,\u201d Del Rio told NBC. \u201cThere is no one living in that house. All the lights are off. But I have the air at 60 because I don\u2019t want the pipes to freeze.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Del Rio\u2019s electric company is Griddy, which NBC reported has been telling customers to temporarily switch providers because their prices are controlled by the market and have spiked. Because of the recent winter storm and the need for additional energy consumption, Griddy\u2019s prices have jumped to more than $9,000 per megawatt hour. The cost is usually $50 per megawatt hour during the winter season.<\/p>\n<p>More from NBC:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>The Electric Reliability Council of Texas, or ERCOT, which manages power for about 90 percent of the state\u2019s electric load, was unprepared for the frigid conditions of the past two weeks: The primary electric grid was hit with off-the-charts&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/business\/consumer\/winter-freeze-drives-gas-prices-higher-costs-yet-come-n1258034\">demand for power<\/a>&nbsp;as Texans tried to heat their homes \u2014 demand that outpaced&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/science\/environment\/one-texas-storm-exposed-energy-grid-unprepared-climate-change-rcna289\">utility officials\u2019 highest estimates for an extreme peak load.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019m taking responsibility for the current status of ERCOT,\u201d Gov. Greg Abbott&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/videos\/news\/2021\/02\/18\/abbott-im-taking-responsibility-current-status-ercot-texas-power-outage\/4498197001\/\">told reporters on Thursday.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Customers outside the ERCOT service area have also been hit with sticker shock. Veronica Garcia, a Reliant Energy customer in Mansfield, Texas, told NBC News her bill is projected to be twice as much as she typically pays a month for electricity. She last paid $63 on Feb. 11 to power her one-bedroom apartment, but her bill is projected to be between $114 and $133 in March, according to documents reviewed by NBC News.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>As The Daily Wire\u2019s Charlotte Pence Bond <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/millions-without-power-in-texas-energy-prices-climb\">reported<\/a> last week, natural gas and gasoline futures increased due to the storm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/?symbol=@NG.1\">Henry Hub natural gas futures<\/a>&nbsp;jumped 6.7% to trade at $3.106 per million British thermal units.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/?symbol=@RB.1\">Gasoline futures<\/a>&nbsp;advanced more than 4%,\u201d CNBC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/02\/16\/energy-prices-jump-as-millions-left-without-power-in-texas.html\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe storm that has crippled the Midwest and North East was much worse than expected,\u201d Jeff Kilburg, CEO at KKM Financial, told the outlet. \u201cFrigid temps and speculators caught short are dramatically moving futures prices higher.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reports indicated that millions of Texans were without power last week, and that the collapse of the state\u2019s power grid affected millions in Mexico as well.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/subscribe\">The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
