Marcos, the son of former dictator Ferdinand Marcos, also supported Duterte-Caprio at the inauguration ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>The newly elected vice president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/dutertes-daughter-sworn-philippines-vice-president-2022-06-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously served<\/a> as the first female mayor of Davao starting in 2010. Duterte-Carpio took her first political role in 2007 as vice mayor under her father, who then led the city as mayor.<\/p>\n<p>The two controversial names now set to lead the Philippines are not without critics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the Philippines, political dynasties dominate \u2014 with the Marcos family being among the most well known. Ferdinand Marcos, his wife, Imelda, daughter Imee and son have all held political posts in or representing the province of Ilocos Norte,\u201d The Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/05\/10\/philippines-presidential-election-result-ferdinand-bongbong-marcos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The human rights group Karapatan called on the public to express rejection of Marcos Jr. and Duterte-Carpio\u2019s victory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe call on the public to express our rejection of the Marcos Jr.-Sara Duterte tandem in the 2022 polls and beyond,\u201d the group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.karapatan.org\/reject+marcos+jr+and+sara+duterte+in+the+elections+and+beyond\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> following the May election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe two represent the worst brand of traditional politics and governance in our nation\u2019s history \u2014 one that promotes authoritarianism as a response to legitimate exercise of political dissent, upholds mendicancy to foreign interests over national sovereignty, and uses an empty and fake rhetoric of unity to sugarcoat their incompetence to respond to social problems and their adherence to neoliberal policies that will further demean human dignity,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n<p>Outgoing President Duterte made headlines last year when he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/philippines-president-threatens-to-jail-citizens-who-refuse-vaccine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">commanded<\/a> citizens to get vaccinated against COVID-19, threatening them with prison time or forced injection of a drug if they refused the vaccine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Duterte could be seen threatening the public during a June 2021 speech, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=T6DCuND1RR0\">video<\/a>\u00a0released by The Guardian.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cYou choose, get vaccinated or I will have you jailed. I\u2019m telling you, those police jail cells are filthy and foul-smelling, police are lazy in cleaning. That is where you\u2019ll be,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The video clip cut to another moment when Duterte says, \u201cYou get vaccinated, otherwise I will order all the village heads to have a tally of the people who refuse to be vaccinated.
