The national average gas price continues to hover near\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/gas-prices-hit-grim-national-average-of-5-per-gallon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">$5.00 per gallon<\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, according to\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">AAA<\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Stephanopoulos questioned Yellen on whether Congress could feasibly enact a federal gas tax holiday as a \u201cshort term\u201d measure to ease pressure on consumers.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cGas prices have risen a great deal, and it\u2019s clearly burdening households. So he stands ready to work with Congress, and that\u2019s an idea that\u2019s certainly worth considering,\u201d Yellen said of President Joe Biden.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The federal government currently imposes a gas tax of $0.184 per gallon of gasoline and $0.244 per gallon of diesel, according to the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/tools\/faqs\/faq.php?id=10&#038;t=10\"> U.S.\u00a0<\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Energy Information Administration<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Combined with state taxes, the average American driver pays $0.571 in gas taxes per gallon, according to the\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.api.org\/oil-and-natural-gas\/consumer-information\/motor-fuel-taxes\/gasoline-tax\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">American Petroleum Institute<\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, with Californians facing some of the highest tax burdens.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">When pressed by Stephanopoulos on the Biden administration\u2019s \u201cshifting away from domestic oil and natural gas,\u201d Yellen denied that the White House is to blame for rising fuel prices. She instead attributed the phenomenon to producers\u2019 failure to anticipate higher demand for fuel after the recession.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Yellen also argued for a \u201cmedium term\u201d need to emphasize green energy. \u201cThe way in which we can ensure reasonable energy expenses for households is to move to renewables, to address climate change,\u201d she contended. \u201cThat\u2019s a way to free us from geopolitical movements in oil prices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Multiple White House officials \u2014 including Transportation Secretary\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/buttigieg-electric-cars-will-make-it-so-americans-never-have-to-worry-about-gas-prices-again\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Pete Buttigieg<\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, Energy Secretary\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/bidens-energy-secretary-on-gas-crisis-if-you-drove-an-electric-car-this-would-not-be-affecting-you\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jennifer Granholm<\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, and President\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/white-house-slammed-over-comments-on-electric-cars-fairy-dust-and-unicorns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Joe Biden<\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0himself \u2014 have similarly argued that high gas prices will accelerate a transition to green energy, especially as more Americans buy electric cars.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe people who stand to benefit most from owning an EV are often rural residents who have the longest distances to drive, they burn the most gas, and underserved urban residents in areas where there are higher gas prices and lower-income,\u201d Buttigieg said last year. \u201cThey would gain the most by having that vehicle. These are the very residents who have not always been connected to electric vehicles that are viewed as kind of a luxury item.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA)\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/even-as-prices-at-the-pump-remain-high-california-is-still-raising-its-gas-tax\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">rejected<\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Republican lawmakers\u2019 bid to suspend an upcoming increase in the state\u2019s gas tax, alleging that the policy would help \u201cpetro-dictators and oil companies.\u201d Instead, Newsom pursued a plan to distribute up to $800 in\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/newsom-pushes-400-gas-price-relief-payments-as-california-fuel-prices-reach-record-levels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">tax rebates<\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0per person, depending on the number of vehicles registered in an individual\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Biden administration is likewise considering a plan to send gas rebate cards to Americans.
