It\u2019s almost too many to comprehend.<\/p>\n<p>If you read my <a href=\"https:\/\/redstate.com\/bobhoge\/2022\/06\/16\/get-off-my-lawn-moment-back-when-air-travel-used-to-be-fun-n579691\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel-hell story<\/a> from Thursday night, you\u2019ll know that I was one of those passengers, and that after my flight was canceled, I was forced to get a rental car (at my expense) and drive 12 hours through the night to get my minor children, who were being let out of camp. My kids could go get a COVID vaccine, a tattoo, and probably an abortion too, but the one thing they would not be allowed to do is check into a hotel room without an adult present.<\/p>\n<p><span data-tt=\"{\" paragraphStyle>Today (Sunday), it would seem that we\u2019re victims of double jeopardy: our flight to Los Angeles was summarily canceled, and we have no way of getting back today. We\u2019ve managed to score seats on another carrier, but they didn\u2019t come cheap.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-tt=\"{\" paragraphStyle>On Thursday, JetBlue and other carriers laughably claimed that they were canceling the flights because of weather. This was garbage, as the weather where we were (NY) was perfect. Why would they do this? If they can claim it was the weather, they don\u2019t have to pay for your meals, your hotel\u2014<\/span>anything. (Yes, there were some scattered thunderstorms across the nation. Hardly enough to cancel 10,000 flights.)<\/p>\n<p><span data-tt=\"{\" paragraphStyle>Thankfully, for my second canceled flight in three days, they\u2019re admitting other issues besides the weather, and so the potential of a reimbursed hotel room glimmers in the distance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-tt=\"{\" paragraphStyle>These cancellations come at a heavy price, however. The hotel we had prepaid for Friday night is not letting us off the hook, and we\u2019ve had to pay for a rental car for several days, in addition to extra hotel stays and meal costs. All in all, the unbudgeted costs will certainly run into the thousands. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-tt=\"{\" paragraphStyle>Many people caught in this mess are really hurting. \u201cI closed my business for several days to take my son on his first trip,\u201d a guy says to me. \u201cI\u2019ve lost thousands of dollars, and we aren\u2019t on vacation, and now I\u2019ve got to come up with more money just to find a place to stay tonight.\u201d Next to him, a woman cries.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AirCanada?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@AirCanada<\/a>\u2026.we are so disappointed. (By the way, things were no less of a disaster <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/flight-cancellations-memorial-day-weekend-pilot-shortage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> over Memorial Day weekend<\/a>.) <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-tt=\"{\" paragraphStyle>Mostly it\u2019s due to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/airlines-labor-shortage-cancelling-flights-aviation-jobs-market-2022-6#:~:text=Airlines%20globally%20have%20cancelled%20hundreds%20of%20flights%2C%20citing,labor%20market%20for%20leading%20carriers%20to%20cancel%20flights.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">staffing shortages<\/a>: pilots, crew, and air control. This is partly due to the fact that the Biden Administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/09\/28\/unvaccinated-united-airlines-staff-faces-termination-as-early-as-today.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mandated vaccines<\/a> for pilots and other personnel, many of whom either quit or were fired for refusing. Guess what, Joe; you need pilots to fly planes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/airlines-labor-shortage-cancelling-flights-aviation-jobs-market-2022-6#:~:text=Airlines%20globally%20have%20cancelled%20hundreds%20of%20flights%2C%20citing,labor%20market%20for%20leading%20carriers%20to%20cancel%20flights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Business Insider<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Like many industries, staff shortages were a long-running problem before the pandemic but the pandemic made it much worse as airlines were forced to furlough or let go of workers in the thousands.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But no worries, our Boy Wonder, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, is here to save the day. He hadn\u2019t shown much interest in the subject until his own flight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chron.com\/business\/article\/Buttigieg-US-may-act-against-airlines-on-17251943.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">got canceled<\/a> Friday, and he was forced to drive from DC to NYC<span data-tt=\"{\" paragraphStyle>\u2014an entire four hours<\/span>. (There\u2019s something comical about our Transpo Sec getting his flight canceled, I\u2019m just saying.)<\/p>\n<p>What is Buttigieg\u2019s solution? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/us-may-punish-airlines-for-flight-delays-cancellations-buttigieg-2022-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Punish the airlines<\/a>!<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Pending airlines\u2019 performance over the Fourth of July, the Department of Transportation could choose to take enforcement action if consumer-protection standards are not met, Buttigieg told AP.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Buttigieg says feds have power to force airlines to hire more workers amid travel delays<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/gjjRH03lk7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/t.co\/gjjRH03lk7<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Fox News (@FoxNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FoxNews\/status\/1538486783062712321?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">June 19, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>He\u2019s saying that he will fine airlines if they don\u2019t hire more people. But where are these magical people, Pete? He also urged that airlines go under a \u201cstress test\u201d to see how they perform. I would argue that Memorial Day weekend and this weekend were stress tests, and the system utterly failed.<\/p>\n<p><span data-tt=\"{\" paragraphStyle>As usual, the Biden Administration is quick to pass around the blame: it\u2019s the weather, it\u2019s COVID, it\u2019s Putin. Somehow, it\u2019s probably Trump\u2019s fault, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The fact remains, yet another mess is happening under this administration\u2019s watch.
