Since then, restrictions imposed as a result of the pandemic have continued to loosen \u2014 allowing Americans to head back to jobs they essentially already have. For the White House, this \u201cjob recovery\u201d has been a talking point, and an example of success.<\/p>\n<p>In March, Politifact <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2022\/mar\/02\/joe-biden\/fact-checking-joe-biden-scale-job-gains-2021\/\">rated<\/a><span> a similar Biden comment \u2014 in which he declared that the economy created \u201cmore jobs in one year than ever before in the history of the United States of America\u201d \u2014 as \u201chalf-true.\u201d The fact-check noted that Biden \u201chas a point,\u201d but continued on to explain how the president\u2019s declaration lacked key context.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026 As the nation\u2019s population has grown, so has the number of jobs. Using the annual percentage increase is a better way to make comparisons across the 80-plus years for which data is available. Using that metric, 2021 put up strong numbers but did not set an all-time record,\u201d Politifact wrote, adding that comparing numbers to pre-pandemic levels, taking into account the timing and noting that other factors outside of a presidency play key roles.<\/p>\n<p>Steven Pociask, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theamericanconsumer.org\/our-experts\/\">economist<\/a> expert at The American Consumer Institute Center for Citizen Research, and Brian Riedl, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manhattan-institute.org\/expert\/brian-riedl\">senior fellow<\/a> focused in part on economic policy at the Manhattan Institute, were even more critical of Biden\u2019s claims. Both argued to the Daily Caller that the job recovery simply came about due to COVID-19 restrictions being lifted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCOVID restrictions were lifted. That\u2019s it!\u201d Riedl said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Biden is taking credit for jobs that were going to come back either way, regardless of any presidential policy, simply because the pandemic re-opened \u2026 He\u2019s taking credit for the simple fact that the pandemic ended and people were called back to work, which was going to happen anyway,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Pociask made a similar point, telling the Caller that he wouldn\u2019t even rate the president\u2019s comment as \u201chalf-true.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/12\/03\/joe-biden-america-back-work-november-jobs-report\/\">(RELATED:\u00a0\u2018America Is Back To Work,\u2019 Biden Declares After Mixed November Jobs Report)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re giving him credit for bringing everything back because of COVID \u2026 This is completely the result of COVID, the downturn and the upturn,\u201d Pociask said. \u201cThe question we should be asking ourselves is what, if anything, he\u2019s done in addition to that, and as I\u2019m looking at the statistics today <span>\u2014<\/span> and I can say now that everything has opened up, the market is back opened up \u2013 why aren\u2019t we at the same level that we were in February of 2020?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had governors <span>\u2014<\/span> and for awhile, a federal policy <span>\u2014<\/span> that required that certain businesses be shut down, that only certain capacity could work, so some places like bars and restaurants were out,\u201d Pociask also said. \u201cConcerts were gone. Travel restrictions, you couldn\u2019t get on a cruise. I mean, those aren\u2019t job-creating activities. So if we take those things away and we put them back in, that\u2019s not the credit of anyone, is it? It\u2019s just the credit of the policies that suppressed them and then \u2026. lifted them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At one point, Riedl flipped Biden\u2019s \u201cgreatest\u201d job recovery declaration, pointing out to the Caller that \u201cnever before in history\u201d has the country \u201clost 22 million jobs in one month, must less recovered them two years later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy that measure, this has been the single largest jobs drop and eventual recovery in American history. The context, however, is: Part of the reason the job drop was bigger is because the population\u2019s bigger,\u201d Riedl said, pointing out an important metric mentioned by Politifact in March.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. population growth was also <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/amp\/Business\/wireStory\/ap-fact-check-biden-puffs-claims-virus-job-82361370\">mentioned<\/a> in an Associated Press fact check article published in January 2022. That fact check focused on a nearly two-hour press conference with the president <span>\u2014<\/span> one of only a few since Biden took office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe economy added 6.4 million jobs in 2021, the most on government records dating back to 1939, but part of that is just a natural rebound from what had been the steepest job loss on record in 2020, when 9.4 million jobs were cut,\u201d The AP also pointed out regarding Biden\u2019s claim that the 6 million new jobs created at the time marked \u201cmore jobs in one year than any time before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Riedl also argued that Biden \u201cdid not oversee the entire job increase\u201d <span>\u2014<\/span> a point that Pociask made as well. \u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/07\/17\/united-states-economy-unemployment-joe-biden-jobless-claims\/\">(RELATED:\u00a0\u2018A Good Sign\u2019: Fewer People File For Unemployment In States Cutting Federal Bonus, Data Shows)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were already on a path, and it just continued,\u201d Riedl told the Caller. \u201cThis was a unique situation where I don\u2019t think political credit is something to hand out \u2026 It\u2019s one thing to create millions of jobs during an economy that was already at full employment and growing. That\u2019s a challenge. But when 22 million people temporarily are sent home for a pandemic, simply calling everyone back to work is not really the same thing as creating permanent new jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In May, the U.S. economy <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/06\/03\/jobs-growth-may-department-of-labor-joe-biden\/\">added<\/a> 390,000 jobs in May while the unemployment rate remained at its previous 3.6%, the\u00a0Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/pdf\/empsit.pdf\">report<\/a> showed. Biden has focused on job recovery as a reason to celebrate his presidency while\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/06\/03\/joe-biden-downplays-recession-fears-may-jobs-report\/\">shrugging<\/a> off concerns of a possible recession.<\/p>\n<p>Pociask dove into the BLS reports in explaining his <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/01\/07\/republican-joe-biden-job-report-kevin-mccarthy-bryan-steil\/\">reasoning<\/a> to the Caller. Ultimately, he declared that Americans simply have to \u201clook at the facts,\u201d saying that \u201cemployment is lower today than it was before COVID.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a statistical fact, and you can find it in the Bureau of Labor Statistics\u2019 numbers on a seasonally adjusted basis,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s right there. It\u2019s clear to me that \u2026 to account for the seasonality, there\u2019s no other way to come to the conclusion that employment, labor force participation, and real hourly earnings is lower today than it was in that February before COVID.
