Fred Upton tried to downplay the concerns of Second Amendment advocates over new gun control legislation while speaking on CNN\u2019s \u201cState of the Union\u201d Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Host Dana Bash asked whether it\u2019s possible Congress would strike a deal on gun control before the impending recess.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to turn to guns. A bipartisan group in the Senate is trying to lock down a compromise deal, but funding for state red flag laws and eliminating the so-called \u2018boyfriend loophole\u2019 do remain sticking points for Republicans. Congress leaves for recess in a week. Do you think a deal is still gettable?\u201d Bash asked.<\/p>\n<p>Upton said he thinks a deal is still possible before recess, but the two \u201csticking points\u201d are \u201ccommon sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLaw abiding folks shouldn\u2019t have any fears in terms of what\u2019s going on. It\u2019s been a rallying point, particularly for the NRA and Gun Owners of America. You look at their website and they\u2019re raising cash like you wouldn\u2019t believe in terms of, \u2018their Second Amendment rights are being taken away.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not what\u2019s happening here. This is common sense stuff. But it\u2019s been elevated, for sure, particularly when you have some pretty well-respected Republicans, whether it be John Cornyn or Dan Crenshaw literally being accosted at their state conventions in Texas this weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/06\/06\/illinois-mary-miller-rodney-davis-campaign-red-flag-laws-primary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Red flag laws<\/a>, also known as extreme risk protection orders, allow a court to confiscate a firearm from an individual who is believed to pose a violent threat. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/01\/05\/firearms-seized-colorado-black-panther\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Police Use Red Flag Law To Seize Guns From Black Panther Member Who Allegedly Plotted To Kill Colorado Officials)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the Supreme Court case of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/opinions\/20pdf\/20-157_8mjp.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Canglia v. Strom<\/a><\/em>, the high court ruled seizing a citizen\u2019s gun violates search and seizure rights protected under the Fourth Amendment.<\/p>\n<p>Cornyn and several other Republicans have voiced support for the red flag laws, stoking a wave of criticism.<\/p>\n<p>Daily Caller co-founder and Fox News host Tucker Carlson <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/06\/13\/tucker-carlson-blasts-republicans-backing-red-flag-laws\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blasted<\/a> the \u201cunconstitutional\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/11\/15\/red-flag-gun-laws-infrequently-used\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">red flag laws<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you can seize people\u2019s guns without proving that they committed a crime, why can\u2019t you imprison them without proving that they committed a crime? If you can take their guns, why can\u2019t you take their homes? Why can\u2019t you empty their bank accounts?\u201d Carlson said Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Cornyn was <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/06\/17\/john-cornyn-heckled-texas-republican-party-gun-control\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">drowned out<\/a> by chants of \u201cno red flags, no red flags,\u201d while speaking Friday at a convention in Texas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Republican Michigan Rep.
