Wade<\/em> case that made abortion a federal right, drew widespread criticism online. Several key Democrats, including President Joe Biden, Harris, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have been trying to reconcile their religious faiths with their support for abortion as the decision looms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s nothing about this issue that would require anyone to abandon their faith,\u201d Harris said Friday. \u201cIt\u2019s simply saying that the government should not have the ability to decide what an individual does with her own body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">KAMALA HARRIS: &#8220;For those of us of faith, I think that we agree\u2026there&#8217;s nothing about this issue [of abortion] that will require anyone to abandon their faith&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/6DsMBgqFLQ\">pic.twitter.com\/6DsMBgqFLQ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 RNC Research (@RNCResearch) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RNCResearch\/status\/1537945294016421890?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 17, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Catholics, evangelical Protestants, and many Jews believe abortion goes against their faith.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLord have mercy,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MansfieldWrites\/status\/1538040108468822016?s=20&#038;t=63ve3rKDtYpZgl4k7p7Rag\">tweeted author Stephen Mansfield<\/a>. \u201cThis woman is either ignorant or deeply deceived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKamala Harris is wrong,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/pilkingtonforar\/status\/1537951542006775808?s=20&#038;t=63ve3rKDtYpZgl4k7p7Rag\">tweeted Arkansas state legislator Aaron Pilkington<\/a>. \u201cTo Support abortion is to stand oppose to Christian Faith. Just ask any Bishop or Priest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris grew up in an interfaith household, as her mother was Hindu and her father Baptist. In an interview last year, she described attending a Baptist church while growing up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn Sundays, my mother would dress my sister, Maya, and me in our Sunday best and send us off to the 23rd Avenue Church of God in Oakland, California, where Maya and I sang in the children\u2019s choir,\u201d Harris <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interfaithamerica.org\/kamala-harris-talks-about-her-own-faith\">told Interfaith Youth Core<\/a>. \u201cThat\u2019s where I formed some of my earliest memories of the Bible\u2019s teachings. It\u2019s where I learned that \u2018faith\u2019 is a verb and that we must live it, and show it, in action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff is Jewish, and the couple, which married in 2014, observes both Christian and Jewish traditions.<\/p>\n<p>The General Board of American Baptist Churches in the U.S.A.\u00a0opposes abortion in most circumstances, according to a <a href=\"http:\/\/religiousinstitute.org\/denom_statements\/american-baptist-resolution-concerning-abortion-and-ministry-in-the-local-church\/\">1988 declaration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs American Baptists we oppose abortion, as a means of avoiding responsibility for conception; as a primary means of birth control; and without regard for the far-reaching consequences of the act,\u201d the board said.<\/p>\n<p>The controversial issue has reclaimed center stage in American politics after an early draft of a United States Supreme Court majority opinion leaked in May that indicated the controversial\u00a0<em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>\u00a0decision would likely be struck down.<\/p>\n<p>The draft, written by Justice Samuel Alito,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-supreme-court-strikes-down-roe-v-wade-decision-in-draft-of-majority-opinion-report-says\">stated<\/a>\u00a0that \u201c<em>Roe<\/em>\u00a0was egregiously wrong from the start\u201d and \u201cwe hold that\u00a0<em>Roe\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Casey<\/em>\u00a0must be overruled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pelosi and Biden, who are both Catholic, also support abortion rights. In March, Pelosi described herself as a devout and practicing Catholic, but said the right to abortion is the law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was right for me, it\u2019s not for me to say what\u2019s for somebody else,\u201d Pelosi said. \u201cNor is it right for you, nor is it right for the Supreme Court. This has been a precedent of the court that should be upheld by the court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biden, a lifelong Catholic, has been criticized by members of the faith for his adamant pro-abortion views. In 2019, he dropped his long-standing support for the Hyde Amendment, the 1970s law forbidding the use of federal funds to subsidize abortions.
