Blackwell, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/minnesota\">Minnesota<\/a> lawyer who made the opening and closing rebuttal statements in the Floyd case, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/06\/15\/nominations-sent-to-the-senate-71\/\">nominated <\/a>by Biden this week to be United States District Judge for the District of Minnesota.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Blackwell\u2019s nomination was praised by Minnesota Democrats including Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Sen. Tina Smith (D-MN), and state Attorney General Keith Ellison (D-MN).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJerry Blackwell is widely respected and loved within the Minnesota legal community,\u201d Klobuchar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.klobuchar.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/news-releases?ID=AB9D7DD2-A147-4D38-A646-D183D05E0708\">said<\/a>. \u201cHis extensive trial experience \u2014 including the successful prosecution of the murder of George Floyd \u2014 makes him an excellent choice to be a U.S. District Court Judge. As a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to confirm him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith praised Blackwell\u2019s \u201cexperience and commitment to equal justice will make him an excellent federal judge.\u201d If confirmed,\u00a0this would be Blackwell\u2019s first stint as a judge, the Star Tribune <a href=\"https:\/\/www.startribune.com\/president-biden-nominates-jerry-blackwell-for-federal-judge-in-minnesota\/600182301\/?refresh=true\">noted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer was assigned to the team prosecuting Derek Chauvin by Ellison, who was effusive in his praise of Blackwell, describing him as a \u201cone-in-a-million lawyer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s brilliant, thoughtful and fair, not to mention a pioneer among African American attorneys,\u201d Ellison stated. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to imagine how anyone could be better qualified for the federal bench.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/al-sharpton\">Al Sharpton<\/a> also praised Biden for the nomination of Blackwell.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, Blackwell appears to have made several large political donations to Minnesota Democrats. A Jerry Blackwell in Minneapolis made a pair of $1,000 donations to Governor Tim Walz (D-MN) in 2018 and 2019, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/donor-lookup\/results?name=jerry+blackwell&#038;order=desc&#038;sort=D\">data<\/a> from Open Secrets. A Jerry Blackwell in Minneapolis also gave donations of $1,500 and $2,500 to Keith Ellison.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Wire reached out to Blackwell\u2019s law firm to confirm whether he made the donations or not.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/03\/29\/us\/jerry-w-blackwell-prosecutor-derek-chauvin-trial.html\">has<\/a> also done legal work for large corporations like Walmart and General Mills.<\/p>\n<p> Blackwell could be a key figure in the court, as three judges currently serving had been nominated by Republican presidents and three by Democratic presidents. Blackwell would be the seventh seat on the court.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Biden has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/progressive-groups-celebrate-nomination-of-former-biden-harris-campaign-counsel-to-conservative-leaning-court\">continued<\/a> to make key judicial appointments throughout his presidency. Last month he nominated Rachel Bloomekatz, a Biden-Harris campaign state counsel, to the conservative-leaning United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.<\/p>\n<p>Bloomekatz\u2019s bio says that she \u201crepresented progressive candidates in Ohio, including serving as Senator Sherrod Brown\u2019s legal director for his 2012 reelection campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After news of her nomination broke, progressive groups like Demand Justice, Earthjustice, and the Alliance for Justice all praised her nomination by Biden.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Biden nominated one of the prosecutors of Derek Chauvin, the Minnesota police officer convicted of murdering\u00a0George Floyd, for a federal court position in Minnesota.\u00a0 Jerry W.
