The war now is one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/06\/ukraine-war-update-day-107-will-russia-conquer-donbas\/\">attrition<\/a>, and whichever side can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/06\/putins-ukraine-disaster-the-russian-military-is-bleeding-casualties-in-donbas\/\">hold out the longest<\/a> and absorb the most casualties has more chances of prevailing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Russian Mobilization and Casualties in Ukraine<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>As the Russian military is trying to capture <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/06\/14\/russia-ukraine-live-updates.html\">Severodonetsk<\/a>, Moscow continues to send troops and hardware to the front. According to the Ukrainian military intelligence, Moscow has already committed about 330,000 troops to the invasion of Ukraine. Approximately 150,000 of those troops are grouped in battalion tactical groups (BTG), the main warfighting ground unit of the Russian military.\n<\/p>\n<p>And that number is without activating a partial or full-scale mobilization. To be sure, a lot of those troops are inexperienced and no more than cannon fodder, but sheer numbers can carry the day sometimes.<\/p>\n<p>These numbers most probably also include forcibly mobilized people from the Donetsk People\u2019s Republic (DNR) and Luhansk People\u2019s Republic (LNR), but the Ukrainians couldn\u2019t confirm that.\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/06\/17\/russia-ukraine-war-putin-news-live-updates\/\">Ukrainian officials<\/a> are still uncertain if the Kremlin intends to declare a full mobilization and deploy additional hundreds of thousands of troops to the frontlines. A full-scale mobilization would contradict the Kremlin\u2019s claim about a \u201cspecial military operation\u201d with limited scope.<\/p>\n<p>But the casualties are racking up too. Although the rate has slowed down significantly, the Russian forces are losing approximately 200 men killed in action every day. Adding at least double (or triple) that number of wounded in action, and the Russian forces are losing between 400 and 600 troops every day.\n<\/p>\n<p>The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mil.gov.ua\/en\/news\/2022\/06\/17\/the-total-combat-losses-of-the-enemy-from-24-02-to-17-06\/\">claimed<\/a>\u00a0that as of Friday, Ukrainian forces have killed approximately 33,150\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/04\/15\/ukraine-facial-recognition-warfare\/\">Russian troops<\/a>\u00a0(and wounded approximately thrice that number), destroyed 215 fighter, attack, and transport jets, 180 attack and transport helicopters, 1,456 tanks, 734 artillery pieces, 3,563 armored personnel carriers, 233\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/44479\/the-truth-about-russias-terrifying-tos-1a-thermobaric-rocket-launchers-now-in-ukraine\">Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS)<\/a>, 13 boats and cutters, 2,496 vehicles and fuel tanks, 97 anti-aircraft batteries, 593 tactical unmanned aerial systems, 55 special equipment platforms, such as bridging vehicles, and four mobile Iskander ballistic missile systems, and 129 cruise missiles shot down by the Ukrainian air defenses.\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ukraine Update \u2013 Dissent and Money Flight\u00a0<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>In its daily estimate of the war, the British Ministry of Defense touched on the situation in the Donbas but mainly focused on the perception of the war among Russians and what the long-term impacts of the conflict could be on the Russian society and economy.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the last 24 hours, Russian forces have likely continued to attempt to regain momentum on the Popasna axis, from which they seek to surround the Sieverodonetsk pocket from the south,\u201d the British Militar Intelligence\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DefenceHQ\/status\/1537677492433170433\">assessed<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>Russian President Vladimir Putin\u2019s \u201cspecial military operation\u201d in Ukraine gave <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/jun\/17\/russia-ukraine-war-what-we-know-on-day-114-of-the-invasion\">the Kremlin<\/a> the opportunity to further tighten up security and surveillance laws and restrict the Russian population. Now, any opposition to the war, even protesting against it, brings a hefty prison sentence that can reach 20 years behind bars.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Russia, the war has accelerated the state\u2019s long-term trajectory towards authoritarianism. In recent weeks, the Duma has started the process to introduce a 20-year sentence for Russians who fight against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/06\/17\/1105790450\/u-s-ambassador-its-going-to-be-a-long-grinding-tough-war\">the Russian Federation<\/a>. Speaking out against the invasion is also being criminalised. Despite the majority of Russians telling pollsters they support the \u2018special military operation\u2019, elements of the population both actively and passively demonstrate their opposition. The \u2018Freedom for Russia Legion\u2019, recruited from Russians, has almost certainly deployed in combat alongside the Ukrainian military. Some high profile Russian officials have highly likely been side-lined after criticising the war,\u201d the British Ministry of Defense stated.\n<\/p>\n<p>In addition to any backlash within Russian society because of the war, Russian money is leaving the country at unprecedented levels. Reports indicate that 15,000 Russian millionaires are trying to leave the country and settle elsewhere.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cScepticism about the war is likely also particularly strong amongst Russia\u2019s business elite and oligarch community. Migration applications suggest that 15,000 Russian millionaires (in US dollars) are likely already attempting to leave the country. Motivations highly likely include both personal opposition to the invasion and an intent to escape the financial impact of the sanctions imposed on Russia.
