Cadets will receive the bonus in two installments, earning $10,000 upon joining and receiving the second half after they graduate from the police academy, the mayor said.\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"Enhancement\" data-align-center=\"\">\n<div class=\"Enhancement-item\">\n<figure class=\"Figure\"><source type=\"image\/webp\" data-image-size=\"articleImage\" \/><source data-image-size=\"articleImage\" \/><figcaption>\n<div class=\"Figure-content\">\n<p>Graeme Jennings, Washington Examiner<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>\n<br \/>\u201cWe know how critical it is to have a fully staffed and resourced MPD, and that requires us to hire strong talent and to retain experienced officers,\u201d Bowser said. \u201cThese hiring bonuses will help MPD recruit and hire more officers to keep our city safe.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p><b><br \/>\n<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/politics\/dc-display-of-flags-with-51-stars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DC MAYOR ORDERS DISPLAY OF US FLAGS WITH 51 STARS IN PUSH FOR STATEHOOD<\/a><br \/>\n<\/b>\n<\/p>\n<p>The expedited timeline will mean implementing the monetary incentives before the district budget takes effect on Oct. 1, Bowser said Friday.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe sent the budget to the council in March, and that budget will be available on Oct. 1. But the chief came to me, and he said, \u2018Mayor, it is my job to tell you what we need. By hiring more cadets, the department hopes to increase the number of officers it has on the streets to prevent crimes and respond more quickly.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has been one of my visions for the department to retain members and take care of our own, who proudly show up to work each and every day,\u201d Contee said. \u201cOur goal is that these recruiting incentives will create a pipeline to success for residents and for our youth, who too often find themselves in harm\u2019s way with illegal firearms and crime.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>The expedited timeline is meant to address<br \/>\n<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/mpdc.dc.gov\/page\/district-crime-data-glance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rising crime rates<\/a><br \/>\n in Washington, a focal point for the City Council as it worked to finalize its budget for the next fiscal year. City lawmakers also rejected a suggested perk to allow officers to take their patrol cars home and rejected Bowser\u2019s request to<br \/>\n<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/dc-council-votes-against-mayors-proposal-to-restore-police-presence-in-schools\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">restore police officers<\/a><br \/>\n to schools.\n<\/p>\n<p>The council<br \/>\n<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/falcicchio\/status\/1517322499469496322?s=20&#038;t=TSqQyeReGvhhxJ3Oe5oO1w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shaved off about $6 million<\/a><br \/>\n from Bowser\u2019s budget proposal for the MPD, prompting criticism from the mayor that city lawmakers were stifling her efforts to address safety concerns within the district. Councilman Charles Allen, who chairs the committee responsible for finalizing the budget, fired back that Bowser\u2019s ambitions beyond the more modest proposal from legislators are politically motivated ahead of the primary election.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an obvious choice to try to gin up conflict where there is none. I prefer seeking common ground and keeping politics out of policy,\u201d Allen<br \/>\n<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tomsherwood\/status\/1517312460755243008?s=20&#038;t=TSqQyeReGvhhxJ3Oe5oO1w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a><br \/>\n at the time. \u201cThe council is not the mayor\u2019s rubber stamp, and to describe the committee\u2019s support and dramatic expansion of these initiatives as a cut isn\u2019t a serious response. The two-term incumbent faces challenges from Councilmen Trayon White and Robert White, who have both offered alternative proposals to address crime that don\u2019t involve bolstering the MPD force.\n<\/p>\n<p>Washington has reported 1,768 incidents of violent crime in the district so far this year, a 12% increase compared to the same time period last year, according<br \/>\n<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/mpdc.dc.gov\/page\/district-crime-data-glance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to data<\/a><br \/>\n from the MPD. The city reported the highest increases in homicide, which saw a 13% increase compared to last year, and robbery, which saw a 33% jump, the data show.
