John Cornyn was booed by constituents in his home state at the Texas GOP convention on Friday for his role in leading negotiations with Democrats on federal gun restriction legislation.<\/p>\n<p>From the moment Cornyn, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/06\/14\/mcconnell-his-10-gop-pushovers-and-any-others-who-attack-the-second-amendment-cant-be-in-leadership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one of 11 Republican senators<\/a> including Senate Minority Mitch McConnell who have agreed to surrender to Democrats\u2019 demands to impede the sale and purchase of guns, set foot on the GOP stage in Houston, he was met with hostile boos and jeers denouncing his support for a \u201cbipartisan\u201d bill that <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JakeSherman\/status\/1536010845917954048\/photo\/2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">will likely include<\/a> sweeping and constitutionally questionable measures such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/opinion\/tucker-carlson-red-flag-laws-mass-shootings-due-process\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">problematic red flag laws<\/a>. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"oaQ9T4\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">US Sen John Cornyn gets viciously booed during much of his speech here at the Republican Party of Texas Convention. Chris Murphy and instead opted to list off all of the proposals that he worked to exclude from the legislation. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDemocrats pushed for an assault weapons ban, I said no,\u201d Cornyn said. \u201cThey tried to get a new three-week mandatory waiting period for all gun purchases, I said no. Universal background checks, magazine bans, licensing requirements, the list goes on and on and on. And I said no, no, 1,000 times no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cornyn\u2019s claims that he \u201cwill not under any circumstances support new restrictions for law-abiding citizens\u201d were promptly rejected by the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jonathanvswan\/status\/1537881888634699777\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hostile crowd<\/a> in the Lone Star State who repeatedly chanted \u201cno red flags\u201d and \u201cdon\u2019t take our guns.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"948\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Screen-Shot-2022-06-17-at-5.17.14-PM-948x1024-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-274275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Screen-Shot-2022-06-17-at-5.17.14-PM-948x1024-1.png 948w, https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Screen-Shot-2022-06-17-at-5.17.14-PM-278x300-1.png 278w, https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Screen-Shot-2022-06-17-at-5.17.14-PM-768x830-1.png 768w, https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Screen-Shot-2022-06-17-at-5.17.14-PM.png 1166w\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>The Federalist tried to reach Cornyn by calling his D.C. office, but the voicemail box was full. His communications director did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment. <\/p>\n<p>Cornyn took fire earlier this week from the Republican Party of Texas\u2019 Platform Committee which unanimously <a href=\"https:\/\/texasscorecard.com\/federal\/gop-resolution-rebukes-cornyn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">approved a resolution<\/a> rebuking Cornyn and every other Republican who voiced support for \u201cthe Gang of 20 Gun Control bill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the past, Cornyn has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornyn.senate.gov\/content\/issues\/right-keep-and-bear-arms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bragged<\/a>\u00a0about his A+ rating from the National Rifle Association but the Republican resolution stated that raising the gun purchasing age, instituting red flag laws, and mandating waiting periods \u201cis a violation of the Second Amendment and our God given rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After facing backlash from his party and his state, Cornyn recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/senate-gun-deal-negotiators-differ-on-red-flag-laws-domestic-abuser-rules-11655384887\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">signaled a hesitancy <\/a>to sign the gun restriction legislation due to concerns over the \u201cboyfriend loophole,\u201d a provision that expands current law to ban boyfriends and girlfriends convicted of domestic violence from obtaining a gun, and a provision that could withhold funds from states that don\u2019t pass red flag laws.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Jordan Boyd is a staff writer at The Federalist and co-producer of The Federalist Radio Hour.
