Although he was born in Taiwan and lived in Las Vegas, investigators discovered documents in his car that showed his \u201chatred of the Taiwanese people.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Police have noted that he \u201cwas upset about political tensions between China and Taiwan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As The Guardian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2022\/jun\/17\/california-taiwanese-church-shooting-suspect-charged-hate-crime\">reported<\/a>, the shooting elevated a sense of intense observation of China\u2019s discussion about Taiwan and deeply upset the Taiwanese American population in California.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe are all shocked that it went to this level of violence \u2026 that someone would bring a gun and shoot up a church,\u201d Ho Chie Tsai, the founder of the non-profit TaiwaneseAmerican.org, said, per the outlet. \u201cThis echoes much of the issues that America as a whole has had to deal with: gun violence, race relations and the effects of misinformation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The suspect will likely be arraigned on August 19, and did not put in a plea at the first court appearance in May.
