According to Mental Health America, men die by suicide 4x higher than women and are often told to \u201cman up\u201d or bottle their emotions. Culturally, American men are looked at as the breadwinners of their families, which some claim is an immense responsibility.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>\u201cToo many men feel pressure to stay quiet about mental health,\u201d said Katie Dolieslager with the Arrow Project. \u201cMany of the men I\u2019ve worked with don\u2019t know where to find help or they were coping alone.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Their has been a lot of pressure on men to be unwavering and to provide financially for their families over the years. That type of responsibility can create high levels of stress and anxiety. On top of that, men may have a genetic predisposition to mental health issues, or they may experience trauma from work or military experiences.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>\u201cIt has to do with men just culturally being kind of taught and brought up to hold things in,\u201d stated Chris Mason, Board Member with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nami.org\/Find-Your-Local-NAMI\/Affiliate\/Program-Details-(1)?state=VA&#038;local=0011Q000022G9EqQAK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of the Central Shenandoah Valley.<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This month is men\u2019s mental health month, big shoutout to all men who have been going through a lot alone because they can\u2019t share their problems with anyone since men were taught to \u201cman up\u201d rather than \u201cspeak up\u201d. More than six million men are estimated to suffer from depression every year nationwide. As time goes on, there will likely be more space for men to express feelings openly without backlash.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>\u201cIf we get it out where men can say, You know what? It\u2019s OK to speak with someone, we will will be ok,\u201d voiced professor Danny Burgess.\u00a0 \u201cThat seeing someone doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re crazy or weak, or any of the things. The stigma labels that sometimes.
