John Cornyn was booed Friday as he attempted to give a speech at the Republican Party of Texas\u2019 2022 Convention.<\/p>\n<p>Cornyn, who has represented the state in the upper chamber since 2002, is currently negotiating a gun control and mental health package with Senate Democrats. Although the negotiating senators <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/06\/13\/ten-republicans-support-bipartisan-gun-control-proposal-framework\/\">released<\/a> a legislative framework on June 12, they have not introduced a bill and have reportedly hit a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/06\/16\/senate-gun-deal-text\/\">snag<\/a> in negotiations over several provisions. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/06\/14\/senators-gun-control-fourth-of-july\/\">(RELATED: Senators Aim To Pass Gun Control Bill By Fourth Of July)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As Cornyn attempted to deliver an address at the GOP convention, hecklers tried to drown him out and could be heard chanting, \u201cno red flags, no red flags.\u201d Red flag laws, or extreme risk protection orders, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/26\/mitch-mcconnell-red-flag-laws-bipartisan-negotiations\/\">allow<\/a> authorities to seek court orders for the purpose of temporarily seizing firearms from individuals believed to be at risk of harming themselves or others. Opponents <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/06\/06\/illinois-mary-miller-rodney-davis-campaign-red-flag-laws-primary\/\">argue<\/a> that the orders can <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/06\/13\/tucker-carlson-blasts-republicans-backing-red-flag-laws\/\">violate<\/a> the constitutional rights of gun owners, and can be abused.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">US Sen John Cornyn gets viciously booed during much of his speech here at the Republican Party of Texas Convention. Fellow Texas Sen. Ted Cruz has <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/05\/27\/ted-cruz-john-cornyn-gun-restrictions-uvalde\/\">argued<\/a> that gun control legislation does not work, and that Congress should increase funding for school security. Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton and eight other Republicans introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kennedy.senate.gov\/public\/_cache\/files\/a\/e\/ae380c0f-fa07-4d4c-b4eb-401cff516d25\/4E2E71041F2C255C1428D2D687E77640.stop-gun-criminals-act--for-introduction.pdf\">legislation<\/a> on June 9 that would establish a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison for any individual that illegally possesses a firearm.<\/p>\n<p>The negotiating group of 20 senators is reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/huddle\/2022\/06\/17\/gun-bill-writing-spills-into-the-weekend-00040453?nname=huddle&#038;nid=0000014f-1646-d88f-a1cf-5f46b4be0000&#038;nrid=f84ae832-d366-4e0d-a63d-13763d6cf34b&#038;nlid=630309\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">struggling<\/a> to produce legislative text related to red flag laws and the so-called boyfriend loophole. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornyn.senate.gov\/content\/news\/cornyn-bipartisan-senators-announce-agreement\">framework<\/a> released by the senators suggests that they will offer incentives for states to pass red flag laws, but Cornyn and other Republicans reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/senate-gun-deal-negotiators-differ-on-red-flag-laws-domestic-abuser-rules-11655384887\">want<\/a> the financial incentives to be available to states that create mental health initiatives instead.<\/p>\n<p>The boyfriend loophole refers to a provision of federal law that prohibits individuals convicted of domestic abuse from owning guns if they are \u201cmarried to, lived with, or have a child with the victim.\u201d Democrats previously attempted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/09\/us\/politics\/house-passes-violence-against-women-act.html\">expand<\/a> the ban earlier in 2022 when Congress reauthorized the Violence Against Women Act, but Republicans objected, <a href=\"https:\/\/rollcall.com\/2022\/02\/09\/senators-unveil-compromise-violence-against-women-act\/\">arguing<\/a> that misdemeanor convictions should not disqualify prospective gun owners.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sen.
