The press is the enemy. The establishment is the enemy. The professors are the enemy. The professors are the enemy. Write that on a blackboard 100 times and never forget it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Balz then played a clip of a senator in the 1970s using language similar to Democrats\u2019 current rhetoric, saying the Watergate break-in and ensuing coverup amounted to an \u201cundermining of our democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bernstein praised the January 6 Committee, saying, \u201cThis committee has really got the goods, and we\u2019re going to see a lot more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Questioned about the Oval Office tapes that convinced the public of Nixon\u2019s role in Watergate, Bernstein downplayed the importance of such a high bar for evidence. \u201cIf there is one terrible legacy of Watergate, and there aren\u2019t that many, it\u2019s the notion of a smoking gun\u2026 you didn\u2019t need a smoking gun, and that also goes to today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat they\u2019ve done is amazing, yet as you pointed out what Nixon did was concealed, with secret tape recordings, but a lot of what Trump\u2019s done is out in the open. He says the election was stolen,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Bernstein also suggested that the Supreme Court has lost its legitimacy to partisanship.<\/p>\n<p>Nixon \u201cmight well have escaped, and yet the Supreme Court said in a unanimous decision that the president of the United States must turn the tapes over. Let\u2019s look at the Supreme Court situation today\u2026 one of the things that have happened is that the wife of a Supreme Court justice is now a part of the story,\u201d he said, referring to Democrats\u2019 request for testimony from conservative activist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/ginni-thomas\">Ginni Thomas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s raised all kinds of questions about what she has told Justice Thomas,\u201d Bernstein said.<\/p>\n<p>On that, Woodward offered restraint. \u201cWe just don\u2019t know about this, and we need to keep an open mind. She said she\u2019s willing to testify\u2026 that\u2019s tender territory. Somebody\u2019s wife who\u2019s on the Supreme Court. \u2026 They\u2019re treading very carefully and I think wisely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Woodward also called Trump a criminal. \u201cIt is a crime to subvert a legitimate function of government,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is a clear, laid-down case of obstructing an essential and necessary function of government. What\u2019s more necessary than certifying who\u2019s the next president of the United States? \u2026 1,000 people violently descended on the Capitol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bernstein said, \u201cTrump clearly committed a crime. The next level up is sedition. What is sedition? It is to encourage, foment an insurrection against the government of the United States. We have the first president in history who has tried to engage and produce an insurrection. What do you do with that? \u2026 We failed an impeachment before. Merrick Garland, the Attorney General of the United States, now has a huge decision to make.
