They said that the inmate who made the threat has been moved to a separate housing unit in the Brooklyn prison where Maxwell is incarcerated, &#8220;presumably to protect Ms. Maxwell.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This incident reflects the brutal reality that there are numerous prison inmates who would not hesitate to kill Ms. Maxwell \u2014 whether for money, fame, or simple \u2018street cred,'&#8221; the lawyers wrote. <\/p>\n<p>Maxwell, a British socialite, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblaze.com\/news\/maxwell-ghislaine-verdict-guilty-trafficking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">convicted<\/a> in December for sex trafficking a 14-year-old girl during her time as a close associate of infamous billionaire Jeffrey Epstein. Her July 2020 arrest came years after investigations and litigation against Epstein, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/jeffrey-epstein-charged-sex-trafficking-molesting-underage-girls-n1027356\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">allegedly operated<\/a> an underage sex trafficking ring and raped dozens of underage girls. <\/p>\n<p>Epstein was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblaze.com\/news\/coroner-releases-epstein-death-ruling\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">found dead<\/a> in a Manhattan jail cell in August 2019 while awaiting trial for his sex crimes. His death was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/08\/16\/nyregion\/jeffrey-epstein-autopsy-results.html?searchResultPosition=7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">officially ruled<\/a> a suicide. <\/p>\n<p>In their sentencing brief, Maxwell&#8217;s lawyers argued she should receive a lighter sentence for her convictions based on the alleged death threat and multiple other grounds, including her &#8220;difficult, traumatic childhood.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ghislaine Maxwell is not an heiress, villain, or vapid socialite. She has worked hard her entire life. She has energy, drive, commitment, a strong work ethic, and desire to do good in the world,&#8221; her lawyers wrote. <\/p>\n<p>They claimed that Maxwell&#8217;s dysfunctional relationship with &#8220;an overbearing, narcissistic, and demanding father&#8221; &#8220;made her vulnerable to Epstein, whom she met right after her father&#8217;s death.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is the biggest mistake she made in her life and one that she has not and never will repeat,\u201d the lawyers asserted. <\/p>\n<p>They also asserted that prosecutors sought to charge Maxwell with crimes only because of &#8220;strong media and public uproar&#8221; after Epstein escaped justice. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government faced an urgency to appease the renewed distress of Epstein\u2019s accusers and to repair the tarnished reputations of the [Department of Justice] and [Bureau of Prisons],&#8221; the lawyers wrote. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere would be no trial for Epstein and no public vindication and justice for his accusers,\u201d they insisted. \u201cThe government now had a huge hole to fill: Epstein\u2019s empty chair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maxwell&#8217;s attorneys are seeking a sentence below the 20 years recommended by the court&#8217;s probation department, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/06\/15\/nyregion\/ghislaine-maxwell-sentence-jeffrey-epstein.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the New York Times reported<\/a>.
