The last clinic only uses puberty blockers in clinical trials. The country now emphasizes\u00a0psychotherapy for minors with gender dysphoria instead.<\/p>\n<p>The Swedish hospitals cited a U.K. court ruling in their decision.<\/p>\n<p>The U.K. took a step back in December 2020 when the High Court in London\u00a0effectively suspended prescribing puberty blockers for children 15 and under and recommended that teens ages 16 to 18 get court approval before going on hormones. However, that decision was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-58598186\">overturned<\/a> in September.<\/p>\n<p>The case was brought by Keira Bell, who argued the U.K.\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tavistockandportman.nhs.uk\/care-and-treatment\/our-clinical-services\/gender-identity-development-service-gids\/\">only<\/a> youth gender identity clinic should have pushed back more when she expressed her desire to transition to male as a teen and had\u00a0surgery to remove her breasts.<\/p>\n<p>In April of last year, before the U.K. court\u2019s initial decision in favor of Bell was overturned, the U.K.\u2019s health advisory board, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/health-56601386\">found<\/a> that the\u00a0evidence for prescribing puberty blockers to minors with gender dysphoria was \u201cvery low\u201d and studies of the treatment were small and \u201csubject to bias and confounding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In France, the country\u2019s\u00a0National Academy of Medicine warned medical professionals in a March <a href=\"https:\/\/www.academie-medecine.fr\/la-medecine-face-a-la-transidentite-de-genre-chez-les-enfants-et-les-adolescents\/?lang=en\">press release<\/a> that the spike in young people saying they want to medically transition genders may be due to social contagion and urged medical personnel to approach this issue with extreme caution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever the mechanisms involved in adolescents \u2013 excessive engagement with social media, greater social acceptability, or influence by those in one\u2019s social circle \u2013 this epidemic-like phenomenon manifests itself in the emergence of cases or even clusters of cases in the adolescents\u2019 immediate surroundings,\u201d read the Academy\u2019s press release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGreat medical caution must be taken in children and adolescents, given the vulnerability, particularly psychological, of this population and the many undesirable effects and even serious complications that can be caused by some of the therapies available,\u201d the press release said.<\/p>\n<p>Finland has walked a similar path.\u00a0In June 2020, Finland began deemphasizing medical treatment\u00a0for children with gender dysphoria and\u00a0recommended prioritized psychotherapy instead. Finland did not ban puberty blockers outright, but said they should be prescribed on a case-by-case basis after \u201ccareful consideration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSurgical treatments are not part of the treatment methods for dysphoria caused by gender-related conflicts in minors,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/palveluvalikoima.fi\/documents\/1237350\/22895008\/Summary_minors_en.pdf\/aaf9a6e7-b970-9de9-165c-abedfae46f2e\/Summary_minors_en.pdf\">said<\/a> Finland\u2019s\u00a0Council for Choices in Health Care, which issues recommendations on public health care.<\/p>\n<p>The Council also said more information is needed about the \u201ceffects of different treatment methods on the mental wellbeing, social capacity and quality of life of children and youth,\u201d as well as on the \u201cdisadvantages of procedures and on people who regret them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is quite clear that some of the most progressive countries in Europe are choosing to reconsider their use of medicalizing children\u2019s identities and, in Europe, puberty blockers are fast becoming the most controversial aspect of gender treatment paths for children,\u201d said Stella\u00a0O\u2019Malley, a U.K.-based\u00a0psychotherapist and author who works with young people.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Malley added that \u201cwe simply don\u2019t know who will go on to transition as adults and who will come to accept their bodies as they are,\u201d she told The Daily Wire.<\/p>\n<p>While some of Europe has pulled back, other countries allow children to access transgender hormone therapy at disturbingly young ages. As of 2018, Denmark and Slovenia <a href=\"https:\/\/fra.europa.eu\/en\/publication\/2017\/mapping-minimum-age-requirements-concerning-rights-child-eu\/access-transgender-hormone-therapy\">allowed<\/a> 15-year-olds to obtain hormones without parental consent, while Latvia allowed 14-year-olds to do so, and Poland and Spain put their minimum age only slightly higher at 16.<\/p>\n<p>Canada has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/canada\/canada-transgender-treatment\">rushed<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmaj.ca\/content\/191\/3\/E69\">promote<\/a> gender dysphoric children receiving hormone treatments, as well as permanent procedures like double mastectomies.<\/p>\n<p>In the U.S., the issue of medical intervention for gender dysphoric children has pitted opposing government forces against one another.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration has promoted \u201cearly\u201d transgender surgeries and hormone treatments as \u201ccrucial\u201d for the health of minors who identify as transgender and non-binary.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, last year, Arizona,\u00a0Alabama, Arkansas, and Texas banned\u00a0minors from receiving surgeries related to gender transition. The last three states also banned cross-sex hormones and puberty blockers for minors.
