Kennedy in 1962.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur mission is to both entertain and educate visitors and fans, and sparking conversations like the discourse around Marilyn Monroe\u2019s dress does just that,\u201d the statement read. \u201cNo matter which side of the debate you are on, the historical importance of the dress has not been negated, but rather highlighted. An entirely new group of young people have now been introduced to the legacy of Marilyn Monroe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKim Kardashian wearing the \u2018Happy Birthday\u2019 dress has been hotly contested, but the fact remains that she did not, in any way, damage the garment in the short amount of time it was worn at the Met Gala,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom the bottom of the Met steps, where Kim got into the dress, to the top where it was returned, the dress was in the same condition it started in,\u201d Ripley\u2019s VP of Publishing and Licensing, Amanda Joiner, noted.<\/p>\n<p>The statement shared a report in 2017 on the dress that it said noted \u201ca number of the seams are pulled and worn. This is not surprising given how delicate the material is. There is puckering at the back by the hooks and eyes,\u201d among other examples of damage.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the week, Collector Scott Fortner called the decision by Ripley\u2019s to allow the reality star to wear it \u201cirresponsible\u201d and showed what he said was proof that the dress was \u201csignificantly damaged\u201d and is \u201cirreparable,\u201d as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/marilyn-monroes-iconic-dress-is-significantly-damaged-after-kim-kardashian-wore-to-met-gala-collector-claims\">The Daily Wire<\/a> previously reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do feel that it [was] irresponsible, this is not just a dress,\u201d Fortner explained.\u00a0\u201cThis is a cultural icon. It\u2019s a political icon. It\u2019s a Hollywood icon. It\u2019s part of American history from an event that happened 60 years ago and \u2026 it should have been archived and preserved and taken care of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fortner, who is the curator of the world\u2019s largest private collection of Monroe\u2019s personal property and archives, shared several before and after photos on his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Cev-Ur4Lfas\/?hl=en\">Instagram<\/a> of the sparkling, sleeveless form-fitted gown embellished with thousands of crystals, noting how after the reality star wore the dress, it was now \u201cmissing crystals\u201d with some \u201cleft hanging by a thread.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The collector said he wasn\u2019t upset with Kardashian for wearing it, but with Ripley\u2019s for loaning out a piece of Hollywood history.\u00a0After Ripley\u2019s released the statement Thursday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Ce4ED3mvpx1\/\">Fortner once again took<\/a> to his social media and disputed the claim that the dress was not in great shape in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s look at before\/after photos, taken 52 days apart,\u201d the collector\u2019s post read. \u201cThese are screenshots from Ripley\u2019s IG from May 2, and this fitting occurred on 4\/21. The right photo was taken by @1morrisette on 6\/12. By my count, there are seven crystals missing from the gown in the after photo, which were present during the fitting. The screenshots show only a portion of the dress.
