Version: 4.0.47--><p>Vice President <a href=\"https:\/\/dailywire.com\/news\/we-will-work-together-kamala-harris-gets-stuck-on-repeat-in-rambling-remarks-at-special-summit\/\">Kamala Harris<\/a> announced the launch of a new White House task force on Thursday, aimed at addressing \u201conline harassment and abuse\u201d \u2014 and critics have raised concerns that in practice, it could be the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailywire.com\/news\/new-white-house-press-sec-claims-disinformation-mischaracterizations-tanked-disinformation-board\/\">Disinformation Governance Board<\/a> under another name.<\/p>\n<p>The task force, according to Thursday\u2019s announcement, plans to address all online harassment and disinformation but will also focus specifically on the disproportionate online harassment faced by women and girls and people within the LGBTQ community.<\/p>\n<p>The White House issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/06\/16\/fact-sheet-presidential-memorandum-establishing-the-white-house-task-force-to-address-online-harassment-and-abuse\/\">press release<\/a> detailing the task force\u2019s creation and a number of its objectives going forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, President Biden will sign a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/presidential-actions\/2022\/06\/16\/memorandum-on-the-establishment-of-the-white-house-task-force-to-address-online-harassment-and-abuse\/\">Presidential Memorandum<\/a> establishing the White House Task Force to Address Online Harassment and Abuse, responding to the need for government leadership to address online harms, which disproportionately affect women, girls, people of color, and LGBTQI+ individuals,\u201d the press release stated, going on to note that the task force would include Attorney General Merrick Garland and Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, among others.<\/p>\n<p>The task force\u2019s primary goal will be to \u201cproduce recommendations for the Federal government, state governments, technology platforms, schools, and other public and private entities to prevent and address technology-facilitated gender-based violence, including a focus on\u00a0the nexus between online misogyny and radicalization to violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The task force was also to be instrumental in \u201cdeveloping programs and policies to address the disproportionate impact of online harassment, abuse, and disinformation campaigns targeting women and LGBTQI+ individuals who are public and political figures, government and civic leaders, activists, and journalists in the United States and globally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But as one reporter noted during Thursday\u2019s White House press briefing, several of the task force\u2019s objectives appeared to be very similar to those of the recently-scrapped Disinformation Governance Board.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Wow \u2013 the Kamala Harris Online Policy Task Force sounds SUSPICIOUSLY like the DHS disinformation board..<\/p>\n<p>Naturally <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PressSec?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@PressSec<\/a> has no answers. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/lykn03KHJs\">pic.twitter.com\/lykn03KHJs<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Matt Whitlock (@mattdizwhitlock) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mattdizwhitlock\/status\/1537484934465695744?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 16, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn a background call last night we were told that it\u2019s going to be different from the Disinformation Governance Board in that it\u2019s going to focus on illegal conduct online,\u201d the reporter began. \u201cBut the memo creating it was a little bit broader and it mentioned \u2014 I\u2019m quoting from the document \u2014 \u2018online harassment, abuse, and disinformation campaigns targeting women and LGBTQI+ individuals who are public and political figures.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you clear up the disinformation part?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre replied that she would \u201cneed to talk to her team,\u201d and then notes that she was not party to the background call that the reporter had been on the night before.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vice President Kamala Harris announced the launch of a new White House task force on Thursday, aimed at addressing \u201conline harassment and abuse\u201d \u2014 and critics have raised concerns that in practice, it could be the Disinformation Governance Board under another name.
