He was unresponsive, and one competitor, Myles Copeland, sprang into action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI assessed the situation, trying to see what I could do to fix the problem,\u201d Copeland told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.13abc.com\/2022\/06\/13\/toledo-firefighter-saves-mans-life-while-playing-basketball-game\/\">13ABC<\/a>. \u201cHe didn\u2019t have a pulse, he wasn\u2019t breathing so I instantly started CPR \u2014 what I was trained to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Myles Copeland plays in The Basketball League, a pro startup.<br \/>He\u2019s a firefighter in Toledo. After a 24-hr shift, he drove to New York for a playoff game. When a ref collapsed, He performed CPR on him for 10 minutes, saving his life.. Then, he helped his team win. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/y9a2bwkqlK\">pic.twitter.com\/y9a2bwkqlK<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 SAY CHEESE! \ud83d\udc44\ud83e\uddc0 (@SaycheeseDGTL) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SaycheeseDGTL\/status\/1537463367551660033?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 16, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Copeland administered CPR until paramedics arrived, and is believed to have saved Sulli\u2019s life. The stricken ref is set to have heart surgery next week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was kind of instinctual. It surprised me how quick I was able to switch into that mode, especially being in a basketball game,\u201d Copeland, who works as a firefighter for Toledo Fire &#038; Rescue, told ESPN. \u201cBut with being a firefighter, when you\u2019re off the job, you\u2019re really not off the job. You still got to keep an eye out for the community and what\u2019s going on around you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The game was a playoff contest in the league\u2019s Upper Midwest Region, and played in New York. And then I noticed he had a uniform on and I realized this was one of our players. Myles said, \u2018It\u2019s okay, I\u2019m a fireman.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Copeland played one year of college ball at tiny Sienna Heights University in Adrian, Michigan, where he was a 6-foot, 5-inch forward. Now, he is hoping his actions spur others to get CPR training.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore people need to learn CPR!\u201d he tweeted. \u201cHeart disease is the #1 leading cause of death.
