Rep. Filemon Vela, who resigned from his seat earlier this year, had easily won re-election in the 84 percent Hispanic district in previous years. In 2016, Hillary Clinton <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/3526036-special-election-campaign-manager-for-floress-opponent-rips-democratic-leadership-after-loss\/amp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">won<\/a> the district by 21.5 percent. After that, in 2020, President Joe Biden won the district by 4.2 points.  <\/p>\n<p>So what changed for Democrats in the Rio Grande Valley in June of 2022? <\/p>\n<p>For one, Hispanic Americans are <a href=\"https:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/have-latinos-really-moved-toward-the-republican-party\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rapidly turning to the Republican party<\/a>, partially because of the GOP\u2019s willingness to represent their true interests.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not hard to make a case against the Democrats in charge right now with record-high gas prices, inflation, crime, and more plaguing Americans and their pocketbooks. But when it came to campaigning on the issues that matter to Texas voters in Brownsville, Alice, Beeville, Harlingen, Kingsville, and San Benito, Flores knew what mattered most. <\/p>\n<p>Flores\u2019 opponent Dan Sanchez tried to win over voters by convincing them that he is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2022\/06\/14\/texas-special-election-tx-34-mayra-flores-dan-sanchez\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cconservative Democrat\u201d and \u201cpro-life\u201d Catholic<\/a>. Those characterizations have traditionally appealed to the religious Democrat crowd in the RGV. Flores, however, harped on Biden\u2019s border crisis, an issue close to home to the people in her community and her husband who works for Border Patrol, as a massive, out-of-control problem that deserves attention but isn\u2019t getting it from anyone on the left. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe RGV is under attack. Washington liberal policies are killing our community. Violent crime, human trafficking, and drugs coming across our border,\u201d Flores said in her most recent campaign video. \u201cTo politicians, it\u2019s just a game. But we are the ones who are suffering.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignwide is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"Ou5apMc4DFHsQNYgKKAmJgqIwRJOoLcySB0bdBd1ZG7RfQMz0Vstko3CFnXSirjU2T3Pqx9Vvm\"><\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<p><\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cMayra was able to flip this district because she focused on issues that affect all voters\u2019 lives (border security, crime, and rising costs) while Democrats focused on far-left issues,\u201d a National Republican Congressional Committee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrcc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/TX34-HOW-REPUBLICANS-FLIPPED-A-MAJORITY-HISPANIC-DISTRICT-IN-SOUTH-TEXAS-.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">memo<\/a> stated. <\/p>\n<p>Doing something about the U.S.-Mexico border crisis isn\u2019t just a winning issue for the people living next to it, though. Especially as midterms quickly approach, it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cis.org\/Arthur\/Security-Issues-Including-Border-High-List-Voters-Concerns-Latest-Poll\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a priority for many American voters<\/a>, who are living with the consequences of the crisis like record-high <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/05\/11\/fentanyl-pushed-u-s-drug-overdose-deaths-to-record-high-in-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">national drug overdoses<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/static.foxnews.com\/foxnews.com\/content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Fox_June-10-13-2022_National_Topline_June-15-Release.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fox News poll<\/a> conducted last week found that at least 58 percent of Americans disapprove of Biden\u2019s handling of the border crisis. <\/p>\n<p>As Biden\u2019s approval rating continues on its downward spiral, Democrats are faced with a difficult decision. Leftist candidates can risk the <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/3460922-democrats-look-to-find-unified-voice-on-crime\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">party\u2019s attempts to appear unified<\/a> by distancing themselves from the administration ahead of the midterms or they can try to defend Biden\u2019s terrible track record, a feat not even his own <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/06\/15\/even-with-the-media-tossing-her-softballs-biden-press-secretary-karine-jean-pierre-cant-get-the-bat-off-her-shoulder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press secretary can pull off<\/a> in front of the overly-friendly press corps. <\/p>\n<p>What will it take for Democrats to realize their deliberate silence on the border is deafening to communities once considered blue strongholds? <\/p>\n<p>In May, Biden\u2019s border crisis yielded the highest number of arrests ever recorded, at <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/06\/16\/in-may-bidens-border-crisis-yielded-the-highest-number-of-border-arrests-ever-recorded\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">239,416<\/a>.  Since the beginning of the 2022 fiscal year in October, border officials have logged at least\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/29\/fiscal-year-2022-border-encounters-will-hit-1-million-right-before-peak-migration-season\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1.5 million<\/a> arrests. That sharp increase in apprehensions puts the U.S. on track to see more than 2 million arrests at the Southwest border by the end of the fiscal year in September, less than two months before midterms.<\/p>\n<p>Will the border crisis be the sole reason Democrats lose in the midterms, especially when inflation, crime, and a supply chain crisis are ravaging Americans\u2019 daily lives? Definitely not. But Biden\u2019s border crisis is a big issue for many Americans who are less than pleased with an unsecured perimeter. <\/p>\n<p>Unless Democrats magically start addressing the national security threat on the Southwest border, they are risking not just seats in border states, but losses spanning from coast to coast. <\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Jordan Boyd is a staff writer at The Federalist and co-producer of The Federalist Radio Hour.
