The government is violating the Endangered Species Act and others, the groups <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biologicaldiversity.org\/programs\/public_lands\/energy\/dirty_energy_development\/oil_and_gas\/pdfs\/Multistate-Complaint-on-Applications-for-Permits-to-Drill.pdf\">alleged<\/a> Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClimate change is driven primarily by the burning of fossil fuels for energy and transportation activities,\u201d the lawsuit states. \u201cIn the United States, almost one-quarter of all annual emissions are from fossil fuel resources extracted from public lands. The drilling of these oil and gas wells will likely emit 490-600 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent greenhouse gas pollution over the course of their lifespans, equivalent to the annual emissions of between 131-161 coal-fired power plants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/18\/joe-biden-interior-department-oil-gas-leasing-social-cost-court-ruling\/\">said<\/a> in March it would resume leases after President Joe Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/presidential-actions\/2021\/01\/27\/executive-order-on-tackling-the-climate-crisis-at-home-and-abroad\/\">issued<\/a> an executive order <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/pressreleases\/fact-sheet-president-biden-take-action-uphold-commitment-restore-balance-public-lands\">for<\/a> the DOI to \u201cpause\u201d new oil and gas leases, and \u201creview\u201d the program to reduce \u201cgreenhouse gas emissions.\u201d His administration <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/06\/15\/joe-biden-federal-oil-gas-lease-sales\/\">argued<\/a> Monday that a Louisiana district court should toss a motion by over a dozen states demanding a permanent nixing of the ban after the court placed an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/511923011\/Preliminary-Injunction-June-15\">injunction<\/a> on it in June \u2014 which greenlit leases. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/06\/15\/joe-biden-federal-oil-gas-lease-sales\/\"><strong>(RELATED: Biden Is Still Trying To Ban Federal Oil, Gas Leasing)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The BLM, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gao.gov\/products\/gao-20-329\">manages<\/a> permits, violated the policy and management act by not accounting for how the climate would be impacted by the permits, the environmental groups allege. Its officials did not take steps to prevent \u201cunnecessary and undue degradation of public lands,\u201d the suit says.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. (Photo by Anna Moneymaker-Pool\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The lawsuit also comes as the national average for gas prices has reached over $5 per gallon, AAA <a href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/\">reported<\/a> Thursday, while inflation <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/06\/15\/fed-hike-interest-rates-june-2022\/\">spiked<\/a> 8.6% in May compared to last year \u2014 the highest since 1981.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cei.org\/experts\/myron-ebell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Director Myron Ebell<\/a> of the Center for Energy &#038; Environment at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank, told The DCNF that \u201cenvironmental pressure groups\u201d are \u201chappy to see gas prices soar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Biden administration shares the same goal and so has worked assiduously to curtail oil and natural gas production on federal lands and offshore areas,\u201d said Ebell.<\/p>\n<p>Still, a spokesman for the law firm that filed the suit claimed to TheDCNF that its legal challenge against the Biden administration \u201cwill take about a year to work its way through the courts\u201d and \u201cwill not affect gas prices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Center for Biological Diversity did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe price of gas has everything to do with corporate greed,\u201d John Horning, executive director of WildEarth Guardians, told TheDCNF. \u201cBig Oil\u2019s latest profit statements prove this. They\u2019re rolling in the cash and laughing all the way to the bank while people suffer\u2014both at the pump and from the climate crisis. Moments like these are opportunities to drive systemic change.<\/p>\n<p>WildEarth Guardians joined other groups between 2016, 2020 and 2021, in suing the DOI in connection with leases that included Wyoming and New Mexico, the Wyoming Tribune Eagle <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/uJSgR#selection-3703.0-3703.19\">reported<\/a>.
