Democratic Rep. Barbara Lee of California and Democratic Rep. Mark Pocan of Wisconsin, who both serve on the Appropriations Committee, had introduced a <a href=\"https:\/\/lee.house.gov\/news\/press-releases\/reps-lee-and-pocan-introduce-bill-to-cut-defense-spending-by-100-billion-and-prioritize-people-over-the-pentagon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">resolution<\/a> in the House on Monday to slash $100 billion from the existing defense budget in accounts not related to personnel and benefits.<\/p>\n<p>The bill includes a $12.5 billion jump from Fiscal Year 2022 to support military modernization efforts, decreases procurement by $1 billion and renews a preexisting $300 million Ukraine assistance fund.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">This week, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AppropsDems?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@AppropsDems<\/a> will be kicking off fiscal year 2023 markups. Lawmakers say the proposals could grow before the final congressional vote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll see by how much, but it\u2019s not going to be an insignificant amount,\u201d Democratic Rep. Rob Wittman said House and Senate committees could increase the bill\u2019s topline between $35 and $45 billion, nearing the White House numbers, on a bipartisan basis, according to Defense News.<\/p>\n<p>Lee and Pocan had accused the Biden administration of prioritizing defense industry profits over American citizens\u2019 well-being.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/12\/28\/joe-biden-defense-bill-military\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">last year<\/a>, key priorities like Build Back Better were left on the negotiating table, while Congress approved a $782 billion defense budget\u2014higher than the military even requested. Meanwhile, our constituents continue to struggle with the cost of living and barriers to basic needs like housing and health care,\u201d Lee said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/lee.house.gov\/news\/press-releases\/reps-lee-and-pocan-introduce-bill-to-cut-defense-spending-by-100-billion-and-prioritize-people-over-the-pentagon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement.<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/06\/03\/china-taiwan-us-military-brandon-weichert\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>(RELATED: China Is About To Exploit Serious Weaknesses in U.S. Military Might)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The House Appropriations version authorizes a 4.6% pay raise for military and civilian personnel and requires defense contractors pay a $15\/hr minimum wage to employees, according to the description the committee gave in a <a href=\"https:\/\/appropriations.house.gov\/news\/press-releases\/appropriations-committee-releases-fiscal-year-2023-defense-funding-bill?email=aa661f0d5e3092f9fdab8de369cee653e31d1d6e&#038;emaila=ce2c54dbf817aa3d26da12effcb54911&#038;emailb=ac9d1fe7ac37ced86b5cfe508a5e4440ed8f9a29dca161471643fea109569321&#038;utm_source=Sailthru&#038;utm_medium=email&#038;utm_campaign=06.14.22%20EM%20The%20Hill%20-%20Defense%20%26%20National%20Security&#038;utm_term=Defense%20and%20National%20Security\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement<\/a>. However, it bucks Republicans\u2019 and defense contractors\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2022\/05\/26\/defense-firms-push-congress-for-pentagon-budget-increase-over-inflation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">requests<\/a> to raise the total amount 3% to 5% in line with historic inflation rates, Defense News reported.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation also \u201caddresses violence against women with funding to tackle <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/11\/30\/bipartisan-group-fights-keep-military-justice-reform-in-defense-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sexual assault<\/a> in the military and promote mental health through suicide prevention funds and directs [the Department of Defense] to address extremist ideologies, including white supremacy,\u201d according to the committee statement, with nearly half a billion dollars directed to carrying out recommendations from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/Spotlights\/Independent-Review-Commission-on-Sexual-Assault-in-the-Military\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Independent Review Commission on Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment<\/a>.
