Every flood, every hurricane\u2014every natural event, really\u2014is now blamed on climate change. We have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/09\/14\/1037023551\/climate-change-children-young-adults-anxious-worried-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">burdened<\/a> our children with an irrational dread over their future. Then again, many in The Cult of Malthus won\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/jill.substack.com\/p\/having-kids-is-bad-for-the-planet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">even have children<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>So, why, if we\u2019re on the precipice of this apocalypse, if saving the planet trumps every other concern, is Joe Biden begging everyone to drill? On the days Democrats aren\u2019t blaming Putin for rising gas prices (a cost the president not long ago <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/03\/09\/biden-sacrifices-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">argued<\/a> was worth paying for \u201cfreedom\u201d), they\u2019re blaming oil companies for profiteering. Wednesday, as the national average hit $5.014 (nearly two dollars higher than last year), Joe Biden sent letters to refining companies threatening to once again <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/politics\/biden-threatens-oil-companies-emergency-powers-supply-inflation\">abuse his executive powers<\/a> if they do not immediately alleviate high prices\u2014a political appeal to the imaginary \u201cgreedflation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biden, who promised a \u201c100% clean-energy economy\u201d with \u201cnet-zero emissions\u201d in a couple of decades, now demands energy companies, already at utilization rates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/06\/15\/biden-tells-oil-companies-in-letter-well-above-normal-refinery-profit-margins-are-not-acceptable.html?utm_term=Autofeed&#038;utm_medium=Social&#038;utm_content=Intl&#038;utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1655291176\">above 90 percent<\/a>, invest tens of billions more in new drilling infrastructure, when everyone knows that tomorrow, when prices recede, Democrats are going to go right back to passing laws and regulations that undercut their business. Today, Democrats demand CEOs spend more, tomorrow they will <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JoeBiden\/status\/1239364431294926848?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1537068569497784321%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es3_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Ftwitchy.com%2Fdougp-3137%2F2022%2F06%2F15%2Fthis-joebiden-tweet-from-2020-should-fuel-discussion-at-next-wh-briefing-attn-peter-doocy%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">promise<\/a> to \u201c[h]old oil executives accountable\u201d and drag them in front of congressional committees where they will be scolded by economically illiterate windbags.<\/p>\n<p>That future is baked into today\u2019s price. Because Democrats\u2019 energy policy is a schizophrenic mess, oscillating from puerile to pernicious. You can\u2019t spend decades working to undercut production and campaign on the promise of destroying an industry and then demand it turn on a dime when it\u2019s politically convenient.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats will argue that this is a unique emergency as prices have spiked to historic highs. Guess what? Energy prices will always be at historic highs when you create shortages, which is exactly what progressives have been advocating we do for years. Virtually every left-wing energy proposal in the past two decades, if not longer, has been <em>designed<\/em> to create false scarcity, either through fabricated marketplaces, stringent regulations, or by putting caps on production. This is what they wanted. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo more drilling on federal lands\u201d Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_M_kMDSdISQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">promised<\/a> during the 2020 presidential campaign. \u201cNo more drilling, including offshore. No ability for the oil industry to continue to drill, period, ends, number one.\u201d Not number two. Number one. \u201cNo more \u2014 no new fracking,\u201d the president also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/yes-biden-wants-to-end-fracking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>. Blue states across the country have either banned fracking, or are in the process of banning fracking projects. <\/p>\n<p>And, on the first day of his presidency, Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/interactives\/2021\/interactive_biden-first-day-executive-orders\/\">rejoined<\/a> the Paris agreement\u2014an accord he is now working hard to break\u2014revoking permits for Keystone XL, a 1,700-mile pipeline that was going to carry approximately 800,000 barrels of oil a day into the United States (also baked into the price). Biden signed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/01\/27\/biden-suspends-oil-and-gas-drilling-in-series-of.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a slew of executive orders<\/a>\u00a0prioritizing climate change over energy production, halting oil and natural gas leases on all public lands. When a court blocked him, the Biden administration\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/biden-administration-appeals-federal-court-decision-block-oil-gas-leasing-pause-2021-08-16\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">appealed<\/a>\u00a0the decision, even as indications of an energy spike were clear.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rather than threatening price controls, the president should just rescind all his executive orders.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, until some new technology is devised, implementing any policy that resembles the Green New Deal\u2014the plan Biden says is the \u201cframework\u201d for <a href=\"https:\/\/joebiden.com\/climate-plan\/\">his own efforts<\/a> on \u201cenvironmental justice\u201d\u2014would hold approximately the same economic consequences as having coronavirus economic shutdowns for 30 years straight. That\u2019s merely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/the-coronavirus-economy-is-a-preview-of-the-green-new-deal-economy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">if we followed<\/a> the IPCC recommendations on carbon emissions. Last year, with inflation already looming, Biden preached that it was a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2021\/04\/22\/remarks-by-president-biden-at-the-virtual-leaders-summit-on-climate-opening-session\/\">moral imperative<\/a>\u201d to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/04\/22\/fact-sheet-president-biden-sets-2030-greenhouse-gas-pollution-reduction-target-aimed-at-creating-good-paying-union-jobs-and-securing-u-s-leadership-on-clean-energy-technologies\/\">cut<\/a> greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent from 2005 levels by 2030 and 100 percent by 2050.\u00a0That\u2019s a policy that will have us fondly reminiscing about $5.00 a gallon.<\/p>\n<p>Energy policy can\u2019t be capriciously implemented and then abandoned every time the Democrats\u2019 poll numbers flail. This is just a little taste of the Green New Deal. There is no sentient being that could accept the notion that Democrats are the party that is in favor of abundant fossil fuels. Hopefully the price \u2013 even in small measure \u2014 for their green policies is so politically severe that they will moderate.
