J. Caleb Boggs (R-Del.), but a search of Boggs\u2019 archives has failed to turn up evidence to back the claim.<\/p>\n<p>Curators at the Delaware Historical Association in Wilmington were able to find records of Boggs\u2019 academy nominations for just one year in the early 1960s and could not locate records for either 1965 or the more plausible year 1961.<\/p>\n<p>That means, barring evidence from an unlikely third party, that it\u2019s probable only Biden \u2014 who often shares incorrect or exaggerated memories \u2014 can prove his claim.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur staff devoted a large chunk of last week to this project. We hauled and sorted through a few dozen boxes from the relevant years, which proved to be a needle-in-a-haystack proposition, as we feared,\u201d chief curator Leigh Rifenburg told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>Rifenburg said the three-person library staff was able to find a list of Boggs\u2019 academy picks for 1962 after a \u201cbox-by-box\u201d search, but that Biden wasn\u2019t on that list. A congressional nomination is needed to attend the academy, but it\u2019s unclear if Boggs nominated candidates each year, Rifenburg said.<\/p>\n<p>There are basic biographical problems with Biden\u2019s claim that he was appointed in 1965 \u2014 most significantly, the fact that Biden graduated from the University of Delaware in 1965 before attending law school at Syracuse University. The academy doesn\u2019t grant graduate degrees.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/joe-biden-naval-academy-graduation-1.jpg\"><\/a><figcaption>President Biden claimed at the Naval Academy graduation that he was appointed to the academy in 1965 by the late Sen. It does seem extraordinarily unlikely that an appointment would have been made in 1965, given President Biden\u2019s years of matriculation at the University of Delaware, but we wanted to be thorough,\u201d Rifenburg said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were unable to find appointments for entry in 1961, 1963, 1964, or 1965,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The Naval Academy, meanwhile, \u201cdoes not keep preliminary applications\u201d and therefore would have no relevant records, director of media relations Elizabeth Wrightson told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s speech on May 27 cast his supposed near-enrollment at Annapolis as a laugh line. According to the president, during a 1972 Senate election debate against Boggs, the then-incumbent remarked that his young challenger would have still been in the military if he went to the academy in 1965 \u2014 as he would have graduated in 1969 and then been commissioned for five years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe best line of the debate was after it\u2019s all over, the announcer, the questioner \u2014 who was a good guy, but supported my opponent, who was a good man as well, I might add \u2014 and he said, \u2018Sen. Boggs, is there anything else you want to say?\u2019 And he said, \u2018Yes, just one thing.\u2019 And he took the microphone. He said, \u2018You know, Joe, if you accepted my commission to the \u2014 my appointment to the academy,\u2019 he said, \u2018you\u2019d still have one year and three months\u2019 active duty and I\u2019d have no problems right now,&#8217;\u201d Biden said.<\/p>\n<p>As vice president in 2010, Biden told a slightly different version of the story at the Naval Academy\u2019s graduation that year.<\/p>\n<p>In the earlier version, Biden, who graduated from high school in 1961, said he was \u201cconsidered\u201d by Boggs. Caleb Boggs considered me and I thought I was going to be a pretty good ballplayer. And then I found out you had two guys in the backfield back in those days \u2026 and I realized I wasn\u2019t gonna get a chance to play at all. You had a guy named [Roger] Staubach\u00a0and a guy named [Joe] Bellino. So I went to the University of Delaware.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bellino and Staubach are the only two Navy midshipmen to win the Heisman Trophy as the best college football players in America. Bellino won the award in 1960, while Staubach did so in 1963.<\/p>\n<p>A White House official told The Post on Tuesday, \u201cThe president has spoken about this in the past \u2014 including when he addressed the 2010 US Naval Academy commencement. As he said in 2010, and recently, the president considered attending the Naval Academy but ultimately took his football talents to the University of Delaware.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>The president\u2019s claim has outraged some listeners.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.barstoolsports.com\/blog\/3421081\/joe-biden-committed-some-stolen-valor-and-nobody-is-talking-about-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A widely read Monday post <\/a>on Barstool Sports likened the claim to \u201cstolen valor\u201d and compared it to North Carolina Republican Rep. Madison Cawthorn\u2019s misleading claim that his Naval Academy dreams were derailed by the car accident that left him paralyzed. In fact, Cawthorn had been turned down for admission before the accident took place. <\/p>\n<p>Democrats hammered Cawthorn, 26, for the claim. Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.), for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepSwalwell\/status\/1453545282499747841\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tweeted last year <\/a>that \u201cthe biggest lie a politician has ever told\u201d was \u201c[l]ying about getting into the Naval Academy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biden, 79, is the oldest-ever sitting US president and his detractors often accuse him of being in mental decline \u2014 though he also has a decades-long record of telling stories that don\u2019t add up.<\/p>\n<p>The president frequently shares fictitious or embellished stories in an attempt to relate to his audiences. For example, since taking office, Biden has told<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/05\/06\/biden-tells-false-joey-baby-amtrak-story-a-7th-time-as-prez\/\"> at least seven times a chronologically impossible <\/a>tale involving a former Amtrak conductor to underscore his love of passenger rail.<\/p>\n<p>In another example,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/09\/02\/tree-of-life-synagogue-disputes-joe-bidens-claim-he-visited\/\">Biden in September told Jewish leaders\u00a0<\/a>that he remembered \u201cspending time at\u201d and \u201cgoing to\u201d the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh after the mass murder of 11 people in 2018. The synagogue said he never visited and the White House<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/09\/03\/white-house-admits-bidens-didnt-tree-of-life-synagogue\/\">\u00a0later said<\/a>\u00a0he was thinking about a 2019 phone call to the synagogue\u2019s rabbi.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/joe-biden-naval-academy-graduation-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/joe-biden-naval-academy-graduation-3.jpg\" alt=\"Joe Biden, Naval Academy graduates\" class=\"wp-image-22653871\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/joe-biden-naval-academy-graduation-3.jpg?quality=75&#038;strip=all&#038;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/joe-biden-naval-academy-graduation-3.jpg?quality=75&#038;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/joe-biden-naval-academy-graduation-3.jpg?quality=75&#038;strip=all&#038;w=512 512w\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Biden previously claimed in a 2010 speech that he was only \u201cconsidered\u201d for appointment by Boggs.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">REUTERS\/Kevin Lamarque<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Also in September, Biden<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/09\/13\/biden-claims-first-job-offer-from-idaho-lumber-company-no-record-of-it\/\">\u00a0told an Idaho audience<\/a>\u00a0that his \u201cfirst job offer\u201d came from local lumber and wood products business Boise Cascade. The company said it was news to them and Biden had not previously described an interest in moving to the state.<\/p>\n<p>In January, Biden told students of historically black colleges in Atlanta that he was arrested during civil rights protests \u2014 for which there also<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/sYzFB#selection-957.183-957.237\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0is no evidence<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Biden in 2020 claimed he \u201chad the great honor of being arrested\u201d in South Africa when he was \u201ctrying to get to see [Nelson Mandela] on Robbens [sic] Island,\u201d where Mandela was in prison until 1990. He said Mandela thanked him for it, but later\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/02\/28\/joe-biden-admits-he-was-not-arrested-during-trip-to-south-africa-in-1970s\/\">admitted that it was untrue<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Biden ended his first presidential campaign in 1988 due to a scandal\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2019\/10\/23\/joe-bidens-campaign-has-spent-thousands-on-anti-plagiarism-software\/\">involving plagiarism<\/a>\u00a0of speeches and a law school paper as well as controversy over claims he made about his academic record.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Biden claimed last month at the Naval Academy\u2019s graduation ceremony that he was appointed to the military school in 1965 by the late Sen.
