Today, over 100 other Starbucks locations have done the same \u2014 placing executives on edge.<\/p>\n<p>In a Monday complaint filed with the National Labor Relations Board, labor union Workers United said that Starbucks is \u201cthreatening employees with loss of benefits\u201d for attempting to collectively bargain. At the Oklahoma location where one employee named Neha Cremin works, the threat allegedly includes \u201closs of gender-affirming health care for transgender employees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Starbucks has <a href=\"https:\/\/stories.starbucks.com\/stories\/2022\/starbucks-commitment-to-quality-healthcare-and-support-for-our-partners\/\">covered gender reassignment surgery<\/a> since 2013. Four years ago, Starbucks broadened the insurance to \u201ca host of procedures that were previously considered cosmetic\u201d \u2014 including breast reduction or augmentation surgery, facial feminization, and hair transplants.<\/p>\n<p>A manager allegedly told Cremin that \u201cyou could gain, you could lose\u201d when negotiating benefits, according to the complaint. The manager then told Cremin, \u201cI know specifically, you have used the trans health-care benefits.\u201d The filing alleges that similar incidents have occurred throughout the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the company realizes that we as trans partners feel particularly vulnerable at this time,\u201d Cremin argued. \u201cI think that in some cases they are willing to take advantage of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Starbucks, however, disagreed with the premise of the report. \u201cWe are not threatening our partners with the loss of benefits if they join a union,\u201d spokesperson Reggie Borges said Tuesday, according to Bloomberg. \u201cWe take a great deal of pride in offering industry-leading benefits and have done so for more than 50 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beyond transgender surgery, Starbucks reacted to the Supreme Court\u2019s leaked majority opinion overturning Roe v. Wade by offering employees and their dependents <a href=\"https:\/\/stories.starbucks.com\/press\/2022\/letter-to-starbucks-partners-ensuring-access-to-healthcare\/\">reimbursements<\/a> when traveling over 100 miles from the employee\u2019s home for an abortion. The company also reaffirmed its offerings of paid leave for adoption, surrogacy, and fertility treatments, as well as free mental health and counseling sessions.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, Starbucks\u2019 commitment to the LGBTQ movement precedes the most recent lawsuit. In 2019, Betsy Fresse \u2014 a Christian from Newark, New Jersey \u2014 filed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/starbucks-barista-files-suit-claims-she-was-fired-for-refusing-to-wear-lgbtq-t-shirt\">wrongful termination lawsuit<\/a> and claimed she lost her job because she refused to wear a \u201cPride\u201d shirt. Starbucks\u2019 ethics and compliance helpline reached out to Fresse about her request not to wear the garment, and she replied that her \u201creligious beliefs prevented her from doing so.\u201d She was subsequently let go.<\/p>\n<p>Despite some managers\u2019 zeal for social activism, many investors would rather see companies focus on profits. An exclusive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/poll-by-two-to-one-margin-investors-reject-woke-companies-pushing-political-causes\">Daily Wire poll conducted by Echelon Insights<\/a> indicated last month that although 29% of respondents agreed it is a \u201cgood thing\u201d for companies to leverage their financial power for political or social end supported by executives, 58% \u2014 twice as many \u2014 said it is a \u201cbad thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked to describe the motives of companies that take stances on hot-button political or social issues, 56% of investors said the firms are merely \u201ctrying to appease their critics\u201d and 34% said the firms genuinely \u201cbelieve it\u2019s the right thing.\u201d When companies do take stances on issues, 36% of investors said the stances are \u201ctoo liberal,\u201d while 17% said they are \u201ctoo conservative.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Starbucks employees across the United States are claiming that the restaurant chain is threatening to strip them of \u201cgender-affirming health care\u201d if they unionize, according to a Tuesday report from Bloomberg.
