The age of majority refers to the age at which a person will be defined by law to be an adult. This will be accompanied by the rights and responsibilities of adulthood. The age of majority varies from state by state and from country to country. Most countries have set the age of 18 being the age of majority.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In almost every state, 18 year-olds are adults. The only exceptions are Alabama, and Nebraska, where the age of majority is 19 years-old.<\/p>\n<p>So, in general terms, you become an adult in the United States on your 18th birthday.<\/p>\n<p>Then why is the definition of adulthood being arbitrarily twisted and redefined by a collection of \u201cbipartisan\u201d politicians under the guise of addressing \u201cgun violence\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the House passed a \u201csweeping\u201d gun control bill \u2014 known as the \u201cProtecting Our Kids Act\u201d \u2014 that would raise the minimum age to purchase a so-called \u201cassault rifle\u201d to 21 years-old. While the bill passed 223 votes to 204 (with five Republicans supporting the proposed legislation), it\u2019s \u2014 thankfully \u2014 dead-on-arrival in the U.S. Senate.<\/p>\n<p>But twenty senators \u2014 ten Democrats and ten Republicans \u2014 celebrated their own \u201ctentative agreement\u201d over the weekend, outlining a framework of changes.<\/p>\n<p><span>In one section, the framework <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChrisMurphyCT\/status\/1536013610014674949\" rel=\"\">calls<\/a><span> for \u201cenhanced background check for under 21 gun buyers and a short pause to conduct the check,\u201d noting that \u201cyoung buyers can get the gun only after the enhanced check is completed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Not only is the Republican support of this framework an example of ideological betrayal, the call to place further controls over legal adults in the United States is both arbitrary, discriminatory, and \u2014 on a dispassionate level \u2014 entirely ineffective.<\/p>\n<p><span>Let\u2019s consider the statistical reality of mass shootings. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theviolenceproject.org\/mass-shooter-database\/\" rel=\"\">The Violence Project<\/a><span>, 27.9% of mass shooters in their database used a \u201csemiautomatic assault weapon,\u201d noting that \u201cthe most common weapon used to commit mass shootings is a handgun,\u201d with \u201c80% of all mass shooters [using] at least one handgun during their crime.\u201d Moreover, 46.5% of mass shooters legally acquired all their guns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Next, let\u2019s consider additional data from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rockinst.org\/gun-violence\/mass-shooting-factsheet\/\" rel=\"\">Rockefeller Institute<\/a><span>. Based on their database, the average age of mass shooters is <\/span><em><strong>33.2 years-old<\/strong><\/em><span>, while 95.7% of mass shooters are male, and 54.8% of mass shooters are white.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In other words, the obsessive focus on \u201cassault weapons\u201d and those under 21 years-old is simply not backed up by the data. Indeed, it would be more statistically viable to discriminate based on sex and\/or race. Given that doing so would be immediately rejected as discriminatory, why is the same not true for age?<\/p>\n<p>In the United States, those in power want to disregard the measurable and concrete metric that is age in order to achieve their political objectives, by bastardizing the very definition of adulthood. Under their ridiculous system, 18 year-olds can be sent to war to do the violent bidding of those in Congress, but would not be permitted the same rights under the Second Amendment as their fellow adults.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>Meanwhile, on the other end of the spectrum, children as young as 14 years-old can get behind the wheel of a car in some states. Given that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/us\/articles\/2021-03-04\/us-traffic-deaths-spike-even-as-pandemic-cuts-miles-traveled\" rel=\"\">42,060<\/a><span> people died in vehicle crashes in 2020, while there were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunviolencearchive.org\/past-tolls\" rel=\"\">19,517<\/a><span> firearm homicides that same year, why are we not immediately addressing this crisis? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Let alone the fact that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sentencingproject.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Youth-in-Adult-Courts-Jails-and-Prisons.pdf\" rel=\"\">tens of thousands<\/a><span> of children are tried as adults by our country\u2019s judicial system <\/span><em>every single year<\/em><span>\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s time we decide \u2014 once and for all \u2014 what an adult is. If Congress wants 18 year-olds to die for them across the world, then they must be afforded the same rights as every other American adult.
