It was the latest sign that crime is a potent issue in municipal elections.\u201d Recent polls show Americans \u201cclearly worried about crime\u201d: Gallup, for one, finds 72% \u201cdissatisfied with the nation\u2019s policies to reduce or control crime.\u201d Simply put: \u201cwhen it comes to the level of government closest to most of us (municipal), crime looks like it will be one of the top issues\u201d for voters.<\/p>\n<h2>Libertarian: No End in Sight for Ukraine War<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cEarly and unrealistic hopes for a quick victory\u201d over the Russian invasion of Ukraine \u201chave faded as the reality of an extended conflict sets in,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/2022\/06\/10\/ukraine-war-unlikely-end-anytime-soon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">J.D. Tuccille observes at Reason<\/a>. Not good for \u201ca world suffering the self-inflicted wounds of pandemic policy,\u201d especially as the \u201ccost of continuing war\u201d is \u201cpoverty, hunger, and bloodshed.\u201d There\u2019s \u201cno evidence of a near-term end to the bloodshed, with all that entails for the entire planet given the disappearance of most of Ukraine\u2019s crops from world markets and the impact of punitive sanctions against Russia as well as the country\u2019s economic retaliation.\u201d Even if \u201cthe right thing to do in this conflict is to hope for and support victory for Ukraine in some way . . . doing the right thing is costly and extremely perilous.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Eye on NY: Beware \u2018Climate Action\u2019\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>The window\u2019s extended to July 1 for public comments on New York\u2019s Climate Action Plan \u2014 \u201ca 300-page exercise in top-down social planning that will directly affect everyone\u2019s lives in costly ways,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.empirecenter.org\/publications\/deadline-extended-for-clcpa-scoping-plan-comments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">notes the Empire Center\u2019s James A. Hanley<\/a>. The plan seeks to slash greenhouse-gas emissions by pushing for renewables and rapid electrification of cars and homes. Yet that will increase electric demand and \u201cshut down reliable natural gas power plants and replace them with unreliable wind and solar energy.\u201d This \u201crisks leaving New Yorkers without electricity on the coldest days of winter, when demand will be highest, potentially resulting in hundreds of deaths.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"single__inline-module inline-module inline-module--newsletter alignright\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<h3 class=\"inline-module__title headline headline--combo-sm-md\">\n\t\t\tKeep up with today&#8217;s most important news\t\t<\/h3>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\tStay up on the very latest with Evening Update.\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Economy beat: Biden Is Still Fueling Inflation<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cAll he had to do was end the COVID-19 lockdowns and let the economy recover on its own,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/editorials\/biden-trying-worsen-record-inflation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">charge the Washington Examiner\u2019s editors<\/a>, but: \u201cInstead, President Joe Biden spent trillions trying to \u2018transform\u2019 the country, and now everyone, especially the nation\u2019s poorest, is paying the price for his hubris.\u201d Inflation rose to 8.6% in May, \u201cits highest level in more than 40 years. Virtually no sector of the economy was left untouched.\u201d Yet Biden refuses to \u201cstop pouring spending fuel on the inflation fire\u201d: He\u2019s reportedly about to cancel billions in student loans for \u201coverwhelmingly wealthy borrowers.\u201d Democrats are now trying to distract voters from their \u201cinflation pain\u201d with prime-time Jan. 6 hearings. Yet judging by the polls, \u201cvoters will not be distracted.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>From the right: Gov\u2019t Failures Drive Shootings<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cVoters have noticed that cities where shootings occur almost daily also have some of the strictest gun laws,\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/why-black-americans-are-buying-more-guns-ownership-laws-crime-violence-protection-11654635686?mod=opinion_lead_pos8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> snarks Jason L. Riley at The Wall Street Journal<\/a>. \u201cLow-income minorities\u201d have felt the brunt of liberal policy makers who \u201ctreat criminals like victims and police officers like criminals\u201d \u2014 which might explain why blacks have led the surge in gun sales. Indeed, \u201cthe past two landmark Supreme Court rulings on gun control were fueled by black plaintiffs who simply wanted to defend their homes and their families. Moreover, they hailed from cities controlled by liberals who have done an extraordinarily bad job of protecting low-income minorities from criminals.\u201d The key problem: government\u2019s \u201cfailure\u201d to protect us.
